Dear colleague,

On 18 October, the LGA will be running a webinar on Fuel poverty, cold homes and health inequalities and we would be delighted if you were able to attend.

In this webinar, Professor Sir Michael Marmot and colleagues will present their recently published report, ‘Fuel Poverty, Cold Homes and Health Inequalities’.

The research, led by the University College London Institute of Health Equity, predicts significant health, social and education detriment for a new generation of children if, as forecast, 55% of households (15 million people), fall into fuel poverty by January 2023 without effective interventions.

Fuel poverty is the inability to keep warm in your own home. This can be down to low incomes, high costs because you cannot afford the heating bills or because your heating system is inadequate and you do not have the money to fix it.

The LGA has estimated that households in England are wasting £770 million annually as expensive heat leaks through the walls, roofs and windows of poorly insulated homes. This creates additional cost pressures on households and adds to the climate crisis through increased carbon emissions.

Fuel poverty has damaging and significant consequences for health, with thousands losing their lives unnecessarily, health inequalities widening and further detrimental impacts upon child health and life expectancy.

Local authorities are well placed to address fuel poverty, but further action and investment in insulation is needed at a national level to enable councils to support their local populations.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Professor of Epidemiology, University College London, and Director, University College London Institute of Health Equity
  • Dr Jessica Allen, Deputy Director, University College London Institute of Health Equity
