Dear colleague,

Welcome to this month's events bulletin.

As part of the 'LGA’s Civility in Public Life Programme' we are hosting two virtual events. the first on 'Personal safety for newly-elected councillors' on Wednesday 10 July. This virtual event has been specially devised for newly or recently-elected councillors who are keen to improve their awareness of personal safety. Built around the role of the elected member, the session is full of practical advice and guidance. Included within the webinar is advice on surgeries, canvassing, home visits and managing unexpected doorstep visitors.

The second virtual event we are running is the 'Handling online abuse and intimidation for newly-elected councillors' on Tuesday 23 July. Many councillors say that they are reporting unprecedented levels of abuse and threats on social media and are keen to learn strategies on how to manage posts which are potentially defamatory, inappropriate or threatening. This practical programme will provide attendees with an awareness of the steps that can be taken to manage trolls and cyber-bullies, including a gentle introduction to the legal framework around social media posts. There will be guidance on how to be safe online generally, as well as tips on how to create a positive online presence.

We also hope you can join us at the 'Sustainability masterclass – informing and upskilling local leaders' on Tuesday 16 July. This virtual event will explore the opportunities to increase the climate change and wider environmental sustainability knowledge and skills of local leaders, by showcasing training the LGA has been delivering, hearing from delegates who have benefited from the courses, sharing new LGA resources now available to all councils, and making the case for cascading training locally.

Please find below details of our other forthcoming events.
