LGA T Level Support Programme ends 31 March
This is our penultimate newsletter as the LGA’s T Level Support Programme will end on 31 March 2024. To date we have supported over 68 councils to successfully plan and deliver T Level industry placements.
By promoting early career opportunities to young people, your council can attract a new generation of talent, improve workforce capacity and increase diversity.
But don’t worry! Our support programme may be coming to an end, but support is still available from Strategic Development Network accessed through the gov.uk T Level employer support page.
Don’t forget our T Level support portal has a wealth of resources to support your delivery of T Level placements at all stages in the process.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to T Levels.
Local government apprentice of the year 2024
Do you know an amazing apprentice?
The event takes place on 21-22 May 2024 and is an excellent developmental opportunity for apprentices to learn, network and showcase their skills and expertise.
Apprentices will work in virtual teams to experience the opportunities, risks, and challenges involved in delivering successful local government services, with a chance of winning an award for their efforts.
The event is open to all Level 2 and 3 local government apprentices. We welcome registrations of apprentices from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This event is jointly run by East of England Local Government Association, South West Councils and the LGA, with great prizes and inspirational speakers from the sector.
National Apprenticeship Week
National apprenticeship week (NAW) takes place between 5 to 11 February 2024 and is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of apprentices around the country and the positive impact they make to communities, businesses, and the wider economy.
The DfE is calling on individuals, employers, training providers and communities to get involved by encouraging everyone to consider how apprenticeships can help to provide #SkillsForLife.
Don't forget to use the hashtags #NAW2024 and #SkillsForLife on social media.

T Levels & Advanced British Standard consultation
In October 2023, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced plans to create a new Baccalaureate-style qualification for 16–19-year-olds which will take the best of A Levels and T levels and bring them together into a single qualification.
T Levels will form the backbone of the new qualification and the roll out and scale up of T Levels will continue as planned.
The aims of the ABS are to:
- bring together technical and academic routes into a single framework, taking the best of A levels and T Levels
- increase the number of taught hours for all students
- require students to study maths and English to the age of 18
- offer greater breadth, increasing the average number of subjects students take post 16, with students able to choose a combination of bigger and smaller subjects, called ‘majors’ and ‘minors’
- have a clear offer for all students.
Progression from T Levels
One of the great benefits of T Levels for local government is that they can be used as a gateway to employment.
Industry placements provide an excellent progression opportunity. They give organisations:
- a way to build entry-level skills - even before you employ a young person
- an opportunity to make sure that a young person is developing the skills, workplace behaviours and experience you need
- a chance to build a talent pipeline for junior positions, apprenticeships and internships.
