Improving the mental health of babies, children, and young people

The Department of Health and Social Care has published a set of documents looking at the mental health of babies, children and young people, how it influences their current and future health, as well as their wider life chances and outcomes. The early part of the life course, from birth to young adulthood (0 to 25 years), provides important opportunities for promoting and protecting mental health.

LGA commissioned research into wraparound childcare

We have published a report into wraparound childcare. Coram Family and Childcare was commissioned by the Local Government Association to conduct research with parents, sector experts and local authorities to build an understanding of current provision of wraparound childcare and how councils might use additional funding announced in the Spring Budget to support the expansion of provision.

Achieving stability for children with complex needs

Ofsted has published a report, how local authorities and children’s homes can achieve stability and permanence for children with complex needs. The report considers the challenges in finding suitable placements for children with multiple needs of different types and identifies key themes from good practice in supporting these children.

Improving support for family reunification

Action for Children and the NSPCC have published a report on returning children home from care and the importance of properly supporting reunifying families. This draws on a survey of, and interviews with, councils in England to understand current practice and challenges.

Senior mental health lead training

The Government has committed to offer senior mental health lead training to all eligible state schools and colleges by 2025, to help with the development of a whole school or college approach to mental health and wellbeing.

More than 60 per cent of schools and colleges have already claimed a grant and benefitted from the training. Funding is still available, and if you haven’t already done so, you can claim a £1,200 senior mental health lead training grant.

The Department for Education (DfE) quality assured training to help schools develop their whole school approach. DfE is also offering second grants to schools and colleges where their previously trained mental health lead left the setting before fully embedding a whole school or college approach. Schools can apply for the grant online.

Mental health and wellbeing: new practical resource and tools

The Department for Education has recently launched two resources to help schools and colleges to promote and support mental health and wellbeing. These include:

Guidance- Preparing for adulthood: Young people with a learning disability and autistic young people

The Local Government Association with support from Partners in Care and Health has commissioned a guide focusing on supporting young people with a learning disability and autistic young people, to pull together relevant legislation and guidance to assist local council staff working in this area including social workers and lawyers.

The Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI)

The CFVI promotes best practice, empowering children, and young people with vision impairment with the right support at the right time, allowing equity in their education, and the opportunity to thrive. Thomas Pocklington Trust, RNIB and sector partners are working together to embed the CFVI into policy across the UK. Take a look at two of their campaign reports to find out more:
