Our sector support offer 2023/34

LGA launches new Transformation programme

As part of our 2023/24 Sector Support Programme funded by the UK Government, we have launched our new Transformation programme. The programme will offer tools and resources – and share learning, skills and expertise – to empower councils to lead transformation activities, achieve their transformation goals and bolster capacity and capability. Our Transformation masterclasses and Transformation workshops are now open for booking, with limited places. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this pioneering programme.

Boosting Middle Leaders programme

Applications are now open for our Boosting Middle Leaders programme, which brings together mid- to senior-level councillors and officers to build relationships, share perspectives, and develop practices to help them to deliver the best outcomes for communities. Please encourage councillor and officer colleagues to apply by the deadline of Sunday 10 September.

Local Government Challenge 2024 applications open

Applications are now open for the 2024 LG Challenge cohort, the LGA’s unique leadership programme to develop the future generation of local government leaders. Please encourage officers at your council to apply by the deadline of Friday 29 September. Prospective contestants can email us at lgchallenge@local.gov.uk with any questions or to arrange an informal call with either the friendly LGA team or a previous contestant.

LGA Skills Partnership Hub programme 2023/24

In response to the unprecedented workforce challenges that councils are facing – as part of our Sector Support programme funded by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) – we are launching a Skills Partnership Hub programme targeted at five occupational skill shortage areas.

Performance management e-learning module

This free e-learning module provides councillors with an overview of what performance management of councils is – and their role in it. Find out more about performance management for local authorities and please do share our performance management e-learning module with councillor colleagues.

New Local Government Data Maturity Assessment Tool

We have launched a new and improved version of our Local Government Data Maturity Assessment Tool, which takes account of updates in the data landscape and feedback from councils. You can use this light-touch tool to assess your council’s data maturity and find resources to support your data maturity journey.

Pathways to Planning graduate programme

Our Pathways to Planning programme supports aspiring graduates into the planning sector. Modelled on our highly successful National Graduate Development Programme, the new scheme will be open to graduates from all disciplines and aims to recruit diverse talent from across the country. Councils can sign up to participate in the first cohort until Tuesday 5 September, with sign-up for cohort 2 opening in the autumn.

Disabled Councillors Leadership Programme

We have partnered with Disability Rights UK to offer a bespoke leadership programme for disabled councillors. Our Disabled Councillors Leadership Programme has been shaped with disabled people and councillors to ensure that it responds to the specific needs of disabled leaders. Now in its second year, the LGA and Disability Rights UK are excited to offer disabled councillors the opportunity to join cohort 2 of the programme.

Leadership Academy – our development programme for councillors

Two additional dates have been added for our Leadership Academy – our flagship development programme for councillors in leadership positions. Recognised by the Institute of Leadership, the programme is even more popular this year and places are filling up very quickly.

Climate change adaptation plan

The Government has published its National Adaptation Programme (NAP3), a five-year climate change adaptation plan, which includes measures to tackle overheating and flooding and to construct public buildings designed to deal with higher temperatures. The Make it Local campaign includes offers and solutions about how councils can deliver a range of services faster, better and more efficiently at a local level.

LG Inform and LG Inform Plus

Support for councils following the launch of the Oflog Data Explorer

We have used the metrics in Oflog's Data Explorer dashboard to create a new LGA Inform report – Oflog dashboard. Users can use LG Inform's functionality, such as the ability to create bar charts, to understand and use the metrics even more effectively. Oflog’s metric identifiers can be used inside LG Inform for councils to generate existing reports or can be imported directly into councils' systems via our API.

For more information on using LG Inform (our free data benchmarking tool) or subscribing to LG Inform Plus (our paid data benchmarking subscription service), please email us at lginform@local.gov.uk or lginformplus@local.gov.uk

first magazine

first magazine logo

The LGA's membership magazine, 'first', is delivered free each month to just under 17,000 councillors and local authority chief executives. Access first online to browse all news articles, features and opinion pieces, including those from past issues.

Councillors who receive the magazine should also be receiving the first e-bulletin. If you find that first online and the first e-bulletin satisfy your need for information from the LGA, please consider helping us reduce our carbon footprint by opting out of receiving the magazine. Councillors and officers can sign up for the first e-bulletin using their council email addresses.

Yours faithfully,

Cllr Abi Brown
