Adult social care: CQC assurance and inspection training and webinar

We will be holding a webinar for elected members and two one-day peer and support residential training events for council officers to help shape our support for councils preparing for and following Care Quality Commission inspections.

Learning from the Care Quality Commission's pilots and the elected member perspective webinar

In our webinar for elected members, we will explore learning from the CQC's pilot phase of assessments of council delivery of their adult social care duties, and discuss how to prepare for the next phase, from a lead member perspective. This webinar follows one held in June and will inform our continued support for councils and our ongoing discussions with CQC and the Department of Health and Social Care.

17 October, 10.30am - 12.30pm | Webinar

We are offering two free residential peer and consultant training events for adult social care assurance and post-inspection in October and November. The aim of these events is to refresh the skills of our existing peer pool and bank of experienced consultants, and encourage new recruits with good communication skills and understanding of adult social care. Both training events include a pre-night dinner and accommodation.

26 October or 14 November 2023 | Warwick Conference Centre (Scarman House)

Places are limited on the training days. Please email us to secure your place.

What Good Looks Like for digital working in adult social care webinars

We are hosting a series of webinars following the launch of the What Good Looks Like (WGLL) for Digital Adult Social Care. We invite everyone with an interest in this area to join any or all of these four webinars as we explore each of the seven success measures stated in WGLL and hear from local authorities across the country to share their learning.

Please register using the links below:

Digital skills and confidence for social workers

We're holding a series of virtual workshops to help shape a national digital skills survey for the social work and the occupational therapist workforce. We want to engage with as many active, registered social workers and occupational therapists from local authorities as possible. Whatever your level of digital experience, whether you have no experience or see no value in digital, or consider yourself to be digitally confident, we are keen to hear from you.

Improving outcomes for autistic people and people with a learning disability in their community

The final two of our series of webinars for councils and their Integrated Care Board partners to support their work in improving outcomes with autistic people and people with a learning disability is taking place next month.

Following the webinars, there will be an opportunity for up to six systems to join an action learning set to support each other to change practice in their local system. Applications will be based on system readiness and capacity to lead the changes needed. Priority will be given to areas that are happy to allow learning to be shared nationally.

For more information, please contact Kirstie Haines, Principal Advisor, Learning Disability and Autistic People.

Request for local evidence and ideas: supporting autistic people into employment

We are keen to build a bank of evidence to understand how councils and devolved authorities are supporting autistic young people and adults into positive employment outcomes. We are particularly interested in:

  • projects related to the council’s economic growth/business development responsibilities to create inclusive workforces and increase skill levels in the workforce
  • projects within the council as an employer
  • projects as part of its social care offer to autistic people.

If you have examples of initiatives, local campaigns, wraparound support or proactive engagement with local employers, please email a brief description of your council’s work to rachel.carter@local.gov.uk

Embedding wellbeing culture

Following our Top tips for embedding a wellbeing culture resource, we're seeking examples of good practice for an online roundtable discussion later this year.

We will be hosting the discussion on 13 September from 1.00pm to 2.30pm. If you have examples of embedding wellbeing culture, please email us or complete our feedback survey, where you can also leave suggestions on how to improve this resource and future resources.

Shared workforce priorities review

We are currently reviewing our shared workforce priorities for adult social care, with Skills for Care, people receiving care and support, and other partners.

The priorities were developed three years ago and identify the key areas of workforce development that we collectively aim to focus on.

At present these are:

  • strategic workforce planning;
  • growing and developing the workforce to meet future demand;
  • enhancing the use of technology;
  • supporting the wellbeing of the workforce;
  • building and enhancing social justice in the workforce.

If you would like to discuss the priorities please email amanda.whittaker-brown@local.gov.uk

Disability and autism training

The Department for Health and Social Care has launched a consultation on the Oliver McGowan draft code of practice. The draft code of practice sets out how health and care providers, who are Care Quality Commission registered, can meet the new legislative requirement (Section 181 of the Health and Care Act 2022) to ensure staff receive training on learning disabilities and autism appropriate to their role.
