Mentoring training for councils
This training is for line managers or supervisors hosting, or planning to host, a T Level placement during academic year 2022/2023.
Spaces are limited. The training will be held around w/c 1 May 2023 (avoiding May Day).
T Levels in practice
Councils are using T Level industry placements as an opportunity to promote local government as an attractive career choice to students and school leavers. This in turn creates a pipeline of talent for the future council workforce.
Bradford Council
This month we meet Paul Scott, Innovations Service Manager at Bradford Council. Paul says that hosting a placement brought fresh perspective to the team, and the high standards of his placement student freed up other team members to focus on strategic projects.
Wigan Council
At Wigan Council, ‘The Wigan deal’ is a corporate plan which sets out the key priority of ‘a good job in the borough for all’. #TeamWigan has been established to develop a talent pipeline through the delivery of T Level industry placements, graduate positions and a range of apprenticeships.
Has your council seen the T Level difference?
Many councils are seeing the benefits of hosting T Level Industry Placements. We want to hear from councils, T Level students and education providers to hear examples of success stories.
If your council has hosted industry placements, or if you’re planning to host a placement, then we want to hear from you. Your case study will be showcased on the LGA website, on LinkedIn and Twitter.
Apprentice of the Year 2023
It is time to register your amazing apprentices for Local Government Apprentice of the Year 2023 which takes place on 24 and 25 May 2023.
Apprentices will work in supportive virtual teams to experience the opportunities, risks and challenges involved in delivering successful local government services – and they might win an award for their efforts!
Booking is now open to all Level 2 and 3 apprentices until 3 May 2023. We welcome registrations of apprentices from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This event is jointly run by East of England Local Government Association, South West Councils and the LGA, with great prizes and inspirational speakers from the sector.
Provider update: Wave 4 T Level delays
The DfE has decided to delay delivery of four T Levels to ensure that the qualifications can be delivered successfully, and that students have a high-quality experience and can progress successfully.
T Levels deferred from 2023 until 2024 are: hairdressing, barbering and beauty therapy; craft and design; and media, broadcast and production. The T Level in catering is also deferred beyond 2024 to allow time to consult with employers and sector bodies to ensure that this T Level meets all the needs of the sector.
16 T Levels are currently available. The T Level in legal services will be introduced as planned in 2023, alongside the T Level in agriculture, land management and production which is subject to the usual approval process. This makes a total of 18 T Levels available from September this year in around 300 providers.
T Level starts have doubled from around 5,000 to around 10,000 between 2021 and 2022. Most importantly, students, teachers and employers continue to give the DfE great feedback on the quality of T Level courses.
Employer support fund for T Level industry placements
A new Employer Support Fund will become available from 1 April to support the delivery of Industry Placements in 2023-2024. The fund will help cover the tangible costs associated with placement delivery, allowing colleges and businesses to build strong relationships for the future.
There is further information on the Employer Support Fund webpage.
