T Levels news and updates
September 2022
 Dear colleague
Welcome to the latest T level bulletin. This edition contains news and updates including the results of the first intake of students, new T Levels starting this September, the Youth Voice Census and upcoming events.
News from the Department for Eduction (DfE)
T Levels show promising start
From the first intake of T Level students, 92 per cent achieved a pass or above. 71 per cent of those students who applied for a university course have so far been successful. Many others have already secured an apprenticeship or a job. This is a promising start, but results like this can only be achieved through the private, public and third sectors offering placements.
We are working hard to support councils to offer placements to T Level students. Find out more about the support offer on the LGA website.
News from the LGA
New term, new T Levels
As the new academic year begins, providers welcome new students who will be starting T Levels. From September there will be new T Levels being delivered, which include Management and Administration, Finance, Accounting and Engineering. You can find which T Levels are being delivered locally to your council via the dedicated search page on the gov.uk website.
The Youth Voice Census 2022 – Youth Employment UK
The Youth Voice Census is the biggest collection of youth voice and insights of young people aged between 11-30 years old. It was found that young people in work said one of the biggest barriers to accessing employment had been work experience (45.2 per cent). The full report can be downloaded on the Youth Employment UK website.
T Level Support Programme
Councils can continue to access support in the planning and delivery of T Level Industry Placements. We will work with you to identify the most suitable offer. Examples of the support councils have already received include workforce analysis, T Level engagement with management and planning the recruitment process. If you would like to explore the support offer further, contact david.drewry@local.gov.uk.
T Levels in practice
Many councils are seeing the benefits of T Level Industry Placements. We have been talking to councils and T Level students to hear how placements are working for them. This month, we take a look at Leeds City Council's experience in taking on placements in digital roles, which you can watch using the link below.
If your council is working with T Level students to provide placements then we want to hear from you. Your case study will be showcased on the DfE website and promoted by the LGA. Please get in touch with us at LGATlevel@local.gov.uk.
Events
Spotlight session – Help for District Councils
Thursday 22 September, 1pm
The LGA will be hosting a workshop specifically developed for District Councils on 22 September. The session will explore how councils are promoting early careers to young people and how they are using T Levels to do so. We have sent the invitation to Heads of HR or HR Leads. For further information please contact david.drewry@local.gov.uk.
NHS T Level Shared Learning Events
Many councils across the country are hosting T Level Industry placements in health and care, and they are proving to be successful in helping them plug employment gaps and boost capacity. The NHS is hosting a series of T Level Shared Learning Events which focus on health and care T Levels and what they can do for your workplace. All three events are free to attend and will give you an insight into care providers’ experience of hosting these types of T Levels. Register your place via the links below.
