Local Elections 2022 round-up

Congratulations to everyone elected in last week’s local elections. Labour had more councillors elected than every other political party combined in England and Wales, and we’re pleased to have gained control of 10 more councils along the way. The BBC have a good round up of the changes.

Commiserations to those Labour councils that lost control, and as with all elections we’ve also lost some great councillors who either lost their election or have stood down – best of luck with whatever comes next for you.

The LGA is still working on the final calculation of political balance, but it is expected that the Conservative Group will remain as the largest party and therefore nominate the Chair of the LGA for 2022/23.

Thank you to Nick Forbes

We know all Labour councillors will want to join us in thanking Nick Forbes for his superb leadership of the LGA Labour Group since 2016.

Nick stood down as a councillor in Newcastle at this election, and therefore we will be electing a new group leader as part of our usual annual elections. Nominations for all LGA Labour officer positions will open this Friday, and we will circulate the details of the election process by email.

Our two deputy leaders, Cllr Michael Payne and Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, will act as co-leaders of the LGA Labour Group until the new leader is elected.

Local Government Conference 2022 – Bookings now open!

The postponed LGA Labour Group and Association of Labour Councillors (ALC) Local Government Conference 2022 will be held on the 18 and 19 June 2022 and booking is now open!

We’ve made some exciting improvements to this year’s conference – including expanding to two full days of events, with an entire day dedicated to councillor development and campaign training, as well as the usual keynote conference speeches, plenaries, and policy workshops.

The leader of the Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer MP will deliver the keynote speech, along with many other excellent speakers from across local government and the front bench. The conference will be run over Saturday and Sunday, with the conference drinks reception and dinner on Saturday night.

Saturday 18 June, 10.00am – 10.30pm

Councillor Development Day – over 35 different sessions of campaign training and councillor development, with something for every Labour councillor who wants to improve as a councillor and campaigner: from newly elected member to long-serving group leader. This includes a dedicated New Councillor programme, digital masterclasses, and practical campaign training workshops.

Conference drinks reception and dinner

Sunday 19 June, 9.30am – 4.00pm

Keynote speeches, plenary sessions, policy workshops and breakout sessions, including a speech by Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party.

The conference will be held at Warwick University Conference Centre.

Booking your place: To book your place, please visit our dedicated bookings webpage. Please note we are only able to take online bookings with a credit or debit card.

Conference passes give access to the entire two–day conference including all training and development sessions, and a place at the conference drinks reception and dinner on Saturday night. Standard conference passes cost £90 (£75 + VAT).

New councillors are entitled to a discounted conference pass at just £60 (£50 + VAT). New councillors are those that have been elected for the first time since our last in-person local government conference in February 2020. You will need to get a promo code from the Association of Labour Councillors to enter when booking your place. To get the discount code or if you have any queries please email councillors@labour.org.uk for further information.

Accommodation:

We have a number of rooms for Saturday night on hold at Warwick University Conference Centre, available on a first come first served basis. Rooms will be in Scarman House and cost £73.50 + VAT (£88.20 inc VAT).

Bookings must be made through Warwick Conferences’ dedicated accommodation booking webpage using the promotional code LabourPartyBBSingJune22

Start your booking on the left hand side, enter arrival and departure date and how many rooms you require. Location is a drop down, allowing you to choose Radcliffe or Scarman. Coronavirus: We would advise anyone planning to attend the conference to have negative lateral flow test taken in the 48 hours before entry to the dinner and conference. We will advise you if there are to be any update government guidance or regulations.

Best practice – getting more women to stand as candidates

We are frequently asked about how to encourage more women to stand as candidates in local elections. We are looking to update our best practice guide with tips, advice and examples about how to do this. If you’ve got any good practice to share that has been successful in encouraging more women to be candidates in local elections, please email hannah.lazell@local.gov.uk

Job opportunity

Lambeth is recruiting for a Caseworker to work in the Leader’s office. The closing date is Sunday 15 May.

Call for evidence of abuse and intimidation

The LGA Call for evidence of abuse and intimidation is ongoing and remains open for candidates and councillors to contribute their experience from the recent election period.  We would encourage councillors to share their experiences both from the election campaign and during their time in office.

Save the date – Climate Change conference

On Friday 16 September, we’ll be holding a one day conference to help you as Labour councillors tackle climate change locally. This follows on from the successful event we held in early 2020, and we’ll be partnering with UK100 to provide you with the insight, knowledge and tools to implement successful strategies and policies. The conference will be held in London as an in person event. Further details will follow nearer the time but for now, please save the date in your diaries.
