Please note, whilst vaccine passports are not a current requirement for conferences and events, this could change before the conference. We strongly advise anyone planning to attend the conference to have proof of full vaccination against Covid-19, or proof of a negative lateral flow test taken in the 48 hours before entry to the dinner and conference. We will update you on this in line with any updated government guidance or regulations on vaccine passports.

Local Climate Engagement Programme – UK100

Local Climate Engagement (LCE) is a new programme to support local authorities in England to plan, commission and deliver high quality public engagement in their climate decision-making, in a way that benefits both them and their local population. It is run by a partnership of five organisations: Involve, UK100, Democratic Society, Shared Future CIC and Climate Outreach.

Through the programme we will work with two groups of local authorities:

  • The Coaching Group: Local authorities who join the Coaching Group will develop their capability and confidence in planning, commissioning and overseeing public engagement in climate decision-making. The programme content includes training for council officers, draw-down mentoring time, and peer learning sessions.
  • The Project Group: Local authorities who join the Project Group will work with us to deliver a high quality piece of local public engagement in climate decision-making, and start to embed the approaches and skills needed for future participation work. The programme content includes training for council officers, up to £45,000 of our time (pro-bono) to support each local authority to plan and deliver a piece of public engagement work, and peer learning sessions.

Full information is available in the Prospectus and FAQs. Local authorities that would like to join LCE should send a completed Expression of Interest form to Chris Hammond, Network Membership Director on membership@uk100.org with the subject line ‘LCE application’. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 24 January 2022.

Personal safety webinars for councillors

The LGA has launched a series of webinars to help to support councillors’ personal safety. The aim of the session will be to equip councillors with the best tools to help them be and feel safe while carrying out their duties as a councillor. The sessions will cover principles of personal safety, risk assessment, use of technology, safe approaches to canvasing, visits, surgeries and travelling, alongside how to manage harassment and stalking incidents. The first personal safety webinar will take place on 8 December 2021 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. The session will be introduced by Cllr Marianne Overton MBE, Leader of the LGA Independent Group and presented by Miranda Smythe, The Baikie-Wood Consultancy, who has 15 years of experience providing personal safety programmes for councillors.

New strategy aims to put Birmingham at the heart of levelling-up

Birmingham City Council is urging the Government to back a levelling-up strategy that could help 75,000 people into work, boosting the city economy by £9bn a year. Prosperity and Opportunity for All: Birmingham’s Levelling Up Strategy is an ambitious blueprint to improve the lives and life chances of people and communities across the city, where 42 per cent of children grow up in relative poverty and the rate of unemployment is double the national average.
