New NPPF and National Design Code special

4 February 2021

Over the weekend the Government published a consultation on some revisions to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Alongside these edits the Government published a brand new draft National Model Design Code. In what we think is a good move the code is going to be tested by 10 real places, and councils are asked to submit an expression of interest.

Time is tight however. Submissions must be received by 22 February 2021. It is never easy deciding whether or not to go to the effort of putting an application together. To try to help you understand the pros and cons we have put two events together at very short notice.

You can sign up with your .gov email address on our eventbrite page. There are two events next week on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. It is shorter notice than we’d like but we need to allow you enough time to make an application if that is your conclusion.

It’s important to stress that these events are not 'training' or a more general discussion on the merits of the changes to the NPPF. We are in discussion on how PAS might support the design agenda more generally. It is early days, but you can expect us to lead with embedding design as part of 'normal' plan-making and development management activity rather than specialist training.

See you in our next scheduled bulletin in February, where we hope to share some details of some new support offers as well as some new case studies.

Best wishes
