Yet more double standards from the Government

The Government are nothing more than hypocrites for ruling the local elections can go ahead but restricting the ability of councillors and candidates to campaign, following last week’s advice from a Local Government Minister.

There is democratic principle at stake here. If it is not safe to campaign for an election, then it is not safe to hold those elections; a view I was delighted to hear echoed by our Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper on the 'Today' programme on Radio 4 only this week.

Despite all this we must keep assuming and planning for the elections to be on track for May. Our view is that the current Government advice is incredibly muddled, as it allows political parties to pay private firms to deliver leaflets but does not let volunteers do so.

But don't get mad, get even! Consider paid delivery where you possibly can. Keep using the phone, email and social media. Keep working and planning.

Best wishes and stay safe.

Helping local businesses

Here is a great letter that Anton Georgiou, our lone Liberal Democrat Councillor in the London Borough of Brent is delivering from his Grandma to targeted residents in his community to tackle fake news on vaccinations. Well done Anton, and thank your Grandma for joining the campaign. It proves Councillors have a key role in keeping residents fully informed at this difficult time.

Encouraging vaccination take up

It is important to encourage people to take up vaccinations when they are offered them across all our communities. Thank you to St Albans District Councillor Chris White for sending a copy of this message from the local muslim community encouraging people to get vaccinated.

Councils' role and T Level industry placements

T Levels are a new technical qualification which give young people (16-19) an opportunity to study alongside carrying out a 45-day industry placement in a workplace. We are encouraging councils to offer T Level industry placements to help provide young people in their area with an opportunity to gain vital work experience in a variety of roles. If you would like to learn more or want to register your interest please visit T Levels Industry Placement: Providing new opportunities for young people.

Housing Delivery Test 2020

MHCLG has published its Housing Delivery Test 2020 measurement. This is the annual measurement of housing delivery in relevant plan-making authorities; the result of which can result in a number of consequences for councils, including the presumption in favour of development. The numbers of 'homes required' within the 2019/20 year has been reduced by a month, to reflect the disruption to local authority planning services and the construction sector, as a result of COVID-19.

The LGA continues to make the case that the Housing Delivery Test fails to take into account the complexity and unique needs of local areas, as well as failing to recognise that councils have few powers to ensure build-out, once planning permission is granted. We continue to call for the 'presumption in favour' sanctions to be scrapped, as they leave councils and their communities exposed to speculative planning applications for developments outside of the Local Plan. This results in homes that do not meet local needs, in places where they are not needed.

Communicating commercial activity: councillor masterclass

The LGA is running a free Zoom masterclass to support councillors to develop the skills to confidently communicate commercial activity to external audiences.
