Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that the LGA has launched a suicide prevention sector led improvement programme in partnership with the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) which will provide an opportunity for councils and their partners to access leading expertise, learn from one another and share good practice. Read about our local, regional and national support offer for 2019/20.
I look forward to seeing you on 20-22 November in Bournemouth for the National Children and Adult Service Conference (NCASC), where we will have an opportunity to discuss key issues in care, health and support.
Yours,
Caroline Tapster Director, Health and Wellbeing System Improvement Programme

Shaping Places for Healthier Lives
The Health Foundation and the LGA are launching a new grant programme Shaping Places for Healthier Lives on 20 November 2019. The programme aims to create the conditions for better health by funding local partnerships to take system-wide action on the wider determinants of health.
Markets and modelling project
The Care and Health Improvement Programme — delivered by the LGA and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Care and funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) — is working with colleagues from councils to improve access to quality information about social care markets, which includes the development of a series of interactive tools and reports that contain key information about Care Quality Commission registered providers and council commissioning activity. For more information email marketsandcommissioning@local.gov.uk.
Community Mental Health Framework
NHS England has published the Community Mental Health Framework which describes how the Long Term Plan’s vision for a place-based community mental health model can be realised. Mark Trewin, DHSC's Mental Health Social Work Lead, has blogged about the opportunities for local government. The Centre for Mental Health has produced a summary briefing.
Every Mind Matters
Public Health England’s new campaign is full of practical tips for achieving good mental health. Campaign materials can be used locally and an NHS-approved tool can complement existing services and wellbeing programmes. For more help or support sign up to the Campaign Resource Centre.
Music for Dementia 2020

Helping people to discuss adult social care and its funding
Talk Shop has produced a free discussion kit about adult social care and its funding. Each kit consists of a set of printed cards and is for six people. A small group can organise their own discussion in someone’s home using one kit. Or several kits can be used in a public event, when Talk Shop may be able to provide a facilitator. Talk Shop believe the best discussions last for at least two hours. There is also a resource for people to explore the same issues online.
Knowledge Hub
Through the Knowledge Hub (KHub), this bulletin, and the blog of data specialist Philippa Lynch, we will provide updates and links to new information available.
LG Inform and LG Inform Plus
Using LG Inform and LG Inform Plus the LGA will provide reports and easy access to information across a range of health and wellbeing themes. If there are further resources you would like to see signposted on our website, please email philippa.lynch@local.gov.uk.
Indices of Deprivation
The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government has published the English Indices of Deprivation for local authorities and lower-level super output areas (LSOAs).
The Indices of Deprivation are a group of measures of relative deprivation for areas in England, provide deprivation scores for each LSOA in England, and are calculated from 39 indicators grouped under seven different domains or themes, each measuring a different type of deprivation. There are also supplementary indices concerned with income deprivation among children and older people.
The full Indices are now available in LG Inform Plus. We have also produced this data for many other geographies such as wards, parliamentary constituencies and combined authorities. If these geographies are not what you are looking for, the Natural Neighbourhoods tool lets you create your own bespoke geographies which can be used with this data or any other dataset in LG Inform Plus.
You can view these metrics individually through pre-built reports, view and download one of the custom reports built by the LGA’s Research Team or create your own reports using the data from the Indices or any of the 9,000 other metrics in the system.
