Annual Conference - message from Cllr Nick Forbes, Leader of LGA Labour Group

Dear colleagues,

This year’s Annual Conference in Brighton is happening against a backdrop of extraordinary political instability. Of course, no matter what is happening in Westminster, Labour councils just get on with delivering for their residents, and I’m sure you’ll hear this reflected at the LGA Labour ‘Rally for Local Government’ on Sunday at 3pm, with great Labour councillors speaking alongside Andrew Gwynne, Angela Rayner, and John Healey.

In line with recent changes to conference, there will be fewer set-piece speeches from the platform, and more time given over to speeches from the floor. It is crucial that councillors attending conference make sure our voices are heard – it is essential that those who aspire to be Labour ministers in Westminster listen to and learn from our experience of leadership in power.

To help any councillors attending understand we’ve prepared the LGA Labour Group Conference Briefing for Councillors. Download a copy or pick up a hard copy from LGA Labour staff at the Councillors (ALC) Stand. I’d urge all councillors who are delegates or have ex-officio passes to make an effort to prepare a speech and try to get called in the main plenary sessions:

Rebuilding Public Services
Sunday 22 September, 9:45-12:35 & 14:00-17:20 - Conference Hall

New Economy
Monday 23 September, September, 09:45-12:35 – Conference Hall

New Internationalism
Monday 23 September, 14:00-16:20 – Conference Hall

Tackling The Climate Emergency
Tuesday 24 September, 9:45-12:35 & 14:00-16:45 – Conference Hall

We have our annual ALC/LGA Local Government Reception on Sunday evening at 8pm, and there is a huge range of fringe events involving local government – we’ve done a round-up below.

I look forward to seeing you in Brighton – do please come over and say hello.

Cllr Nick Forbes
Leader, LGA Labour Group
Leader, Newcastle City Council

LGA Labour Climate Emergency website – now live!

The LGA Labour Climate Emergency website is now live, and can be visited at www.lgalabourclimateemergency.com. Over the summer we’ve been busy gathering the work done by Labour-run councils and Labour Groups in Opposition to tackle the causes and effects of climate change.

Please share this far and wide with colleagues and local Labour Party activists. On the website you’ll find best practice, case studies, examples of campaign materials and campaign packs, all designed to help your council and Labour Group to better address the climate change in your local area.

Please do keep checking back as we’ll be adding more and more material, particularly best practice and campaign materials, and we’ll be doing a weekly blog.

LGBT+ Labour: Inclusive Education Toolkit for Councillors

Labour Councillors are on the front line when it comes to the fight for LGBT+ Inclusive Education for all. LGBT+ Labour have created this toolkit so that councillors have the information they need to advocate for inclusive education, to support the LGBT+ community, and to deal with any lobbying or protesting outside of schools.

Royal British Legion at Labour Party Conference

The Royal British Legion is asking local councillors and party activists to come together to show their support for current and former members of the British Armed Forces and their families, including those from across the Commonwealth who have stood shoulder to shoulder with Britain throughout the last century.

We are delighted to be exhibiting at conference to give everyone the chance to learn more about the Commonwealth contribution to our Armed Forces, and the sacrifices Commonwealth personnel continue to make in service to our country. It will also be an opportunity to hear about our Stop the Service Charge campaign, which calls on the Government to recognise the vital role our Commonwealth personnel play and scrap the unfair visa fees they face to continuing living here after they leave Service.

We invite you to visit our stand to discuss how you can show your support for the Armed Forces community, and to discover how the Legion supports veterans, serving personnel and their families across the United Kingdom and overseas. Visit us in the main exhibition hall at stand 22, or to arrange a meeting with us, contact publicaffairs@britishlegion.org.uk
