£4.8 million social care digital funding opportunity

NHS Digital has released an opportunity for organisations that either provide or commission adult social care services to bid for a share of £4.8m to help them roll out digital projects on a wider scale.

The selected Digital Pathfinders will begin with a four-month development phase followed by a 13-month implementation phase if development is successful.

Councils, adult social care providers with a not-for-profit status and academic organisations can bid for the funding. Partnerships are encouraged.

The funding can be used to scale projects that are focused on two areas:

  1. Use of standards to support whole health and care system interoperability
  2. Use of data for the prevention of escalating social care needs and for early intervention of those at risk of requiring social care

A webinar is being held on Monday 29 April for those interested to ask questions.

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 22 May.

Survey to define core information in shared health and care records

The Professional Records Standards Body is currently undertaking work to support information sharing and the adoption of shared local health and care records.

They have recently been commissioned to undertake work to define the core information that needs to be shared in local health and care records.

A survey has been launched to gather feedback from people on this core information. This follows consultation with people, carers, health and care professionals and system vendors.

The survey is open until 30 April and will take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.

Local authority workshop – information sharing in social care

The LGA has recently been undertaking work with Socitm to hear from councils and social care system vendors on progress and barriers to information sharing and interoperability across the sector. This has primarily focused on sharing to support frontline delivery of care.

The discovery work has involved discussions with 33 councils, eight system vendors and national organisations. The discovery report is currently being finalised with plans to publish this later in May.

We are also putting together plans for a workshop in London during June (date to be confirmed) to share the findings. As part of this we would like to give space to councils to share work they have done locally / are doing locally to support information sharing and interoperability in the area of social care.

If you are interested in presenting at this workshop please contact socialcaredigital@local.gov.uk with information about the work you have been undertaking.

Over the next few weeks we will be finalising the date for the workshop and will communicate this with you.

Analogue to Digital Switchover – opportunity to connect with other local areas

As you may have seen from the TSA White Paper over the next few years (possibly as soon as 2023) traditional telephone line connectivity via PSTN will be switched off.

Following an interest by a number of councils in recent months in what this might mean for traditional telecare solutions we have setup an online group for local areas to share local knowledge, approaches and activity in this area. We’ve created this using the online collaboration tool Slack.

If you’d like to join this group and connect with other local areas around the planned switchover and impact on telecare, please contact Abigail.Vella@local.gov.uk

Department of Health and Social Care assistive technology research

The Department of Health and Social Care recently published a thematic summary of developments in research on assistive technology.

The report precedes a review undertaken by the National Institute for Health Research into the use of assistive technology for older people.

Social Care Technology Suppliers

TechUK have recently published a blog on ‘Place Based Social Care’ and work they are doing to support system suppliers in the area of social care.

In March 2019 an independent association representing the views of adult social care system suppliers was formed. Care Software Providers Association (CASPA) will be representing views of organisations who provide technology to social care providers (rather than local authorities).
