Culture, tourism and sport bulletin

Dear colleague,

The CTS conference took place in Hull and I was very impressed by the work that Hull City Council and its partners are undertaking to regenerate the city through its cultural offer. Delegates heard excellent presentations which showed that despite the many challenges local government faces, councils and their partners are demonstrating the resourcefulness and leadership that is needed to continue leading their places.

Two of local government's key partners and supporters - Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Arts Council England (ACE) - have been consulting on their future strategies. In the LGA’s response to the HLF consultation, we highlighted the important role that councils play in maintaining and developing the local heritage offer and that a future strategy should contain as many open programmes as possible and place councils at the heart of their strategy. The LGA will also emphasise in its response to the ACE consultation that councils remain the biggest public sector investors in culture, and continued funding and support from the Arts Council is vital for a vibrant cultural offer in places.

The latest Sport England Active Lives Survey results have highlighted the continued challenges that still remain in getting more people active. The 12 Local Delivery Pilots offer the opportunity to be more radical in finding the solutions to increasing participation rates.

Yours faithfully,

Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson CBE
Chair, LGA Culture, Tourism and Sport Board
