A warm welcome to Keith - our new leaflet and poster ordering system

As of 1 April 2025, all leaflet and poster orders from the Public Health Resource Centre (PHRC) now go through our new online system – affectionately named Keith. This marks the successful completion of the first phase in our goal to improve the customer experience, save staff time, and streamline how we manage orders. We’ve waved goodbye to email and paper forms, and are asking everyone to place orders via our online form.

Last week, the PHRC officially launched our improved leaflet and postering system – and yes, we really did name it Keith! From 1 April 2025, all orders must now be placed using our online form: https://www.leedslibraries.nhs.uk/libraries/public-health-resource-centre/order-form

This marked the completion of the first phase of work to improve the customer experience. The online form has been in use for a while, so for most people this won’t feel like a big change – but behind the scenes, it’s a huge win. All requests now feed directly into our new system, saving staff time and helping us keep everything running smoothly.

If you visit the library in person, you’ll now find iPads available to place your order instead of paper forms. And just a reminder – you still need to be registered with us to order.

We’re really pleased to have reached this milestone and are already looking ahead to the second phase of the project, which will focus on making it easier for users to browse and select resources before ordering. So keep your eyes peeled for the second part!

Just One More Campaign - 19 May to 27 June

Eating vegetables regularly not only helps us to eat lots of amazing vitamins and minerals that are good for our health, but they are also great for our immunity helping to prevent illnesses.

For many people, it’s hard to eat vegetables regularly as people aren’t sure how to add them into their meals and snacks in a tasty way and vegetables can sometimes be viewed as expensive.

The Just One More campaign aims to showcase lots of exciting ways that affordable, tasty vegetables can be eaten for the whole family. This will be our 4th Year running the campaign after successful engagement in previous years.

Did you know…..

  • Just over 1 in 3 adults are consuming their 5 or more fruit and vegetables per day
  • In Leeds, 2 in 3 children and/or young people are consuming at least 3 portions of fruit and vegetables per day
  • Many people find eating fruit a lot easier than eating vegetables
  • Salad, tomatoes, carrots and peas remain the most commonly eaten vegetables in the UK
  • The most common way that vegetables are consumed is by adding to home cooked main meals such as stir fries, curries and casseroles
  • Increasing vegetable intake can have a significant impact on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

Campaign objectives

The campaign objectives seek to:

  • Inspire the people to eat more vegetables
  • Provide information on portion sizes
  • Share ideas to make eating vegetables exciting and accessible i.e., recipes
  • To encourage a range of people and organisations to take part in the campaign

Want to know more about .... Roma Health in Leeds: Our learning so far

Tuesday 3 June 9.30am

June is recognised as Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) History Month and aims to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and promote understanding of these richly diverse groups.

Most of our Roma communities in Leeds live in poor socio-economic circumstances - a risk factor for poor physical and mental health.

Our recent Roma Health Needs Assessment demonstrated that in Leeds, 90% of Roma people live in the most deprived 10% of neighbourhoods nationally, one in three work ‘elementary’ jobs, and nearly two in five adults report no educational qualifications at all.

This webinar will give an overview of steps taken to address some of health inequalities and ongoing learning including:

  • updates on the local Roma community grants projects - delivered by community members
  • examples of how health partners continue to build solid and trusting relationships between Roma communities and local services
  • local community work through building trust and improving our understanding and communication of local services
  • an opportunity to ask questions about working alongside our Roma community, and how to challenge and address any prejudices and stigma

This online session will be delivered by Catherine Ward and Laura Fitzgerald from Public Health, Leeds City Council and Lidia-Persidia Holea from AME Roma.

Want to know more about .... East Leeds health needs and assets assessments

Wednesday 18 June 10am

This webinar will provide an overview of the Health Needs and Assets Assessments (HNAAs) that have recently been undertaken by the Public Health Localities Team in Gipton, Harehills, and Burmantofts and Richmond Hill. We will explain what a HNAA is, the process for completing them, and share the key findings. HNAAs provide a deep dive into the local health and wellbeing needs, assets and priorities within these areas, and insight into what changes are required to meet local need by building on existing assets. They include chapters on demographics; social and commercial determinants of health; health conditions and life expectancy; and community and stakeholder voice. The session is suitable for anyone working or volunteering in these areas, such as people from the Voluntary and Community Sector, Primary Care, and Local Authority.

The session will cover:

  • what is a Health Needs and Assets Assessment (HNAA)
  • how and why we do HNAAs
  • how the HNAAs can be used to support your work
  • an overview of the key findings of the HNAAs
  • next steps to create positive change

This online session will be delivered by Lauren Turnbull and Chetna Patel from the Localities and Primary Care Team, Public Health, Leeds City Council.
