Business & IP Centre Leeds City Region Newsletter

December, 2024

Dear entrepreneur

We might be getting closer to Christmas but our team is still on hand to help with any business-related questions.

In our final update before the New Year we're sharing upcoming events, news and festive inspiration.

Celebrating Start-up Day 2024

On 19 November, we hosted Start-up Day 2024, an inspiring event featuring talks, a “Planning for the Future” session, a Start-up Stars panel discussion, speed networking and our very first business book discussion. A huge thank you to everyone who braved the cold and snow to join us. We hope you enjoyed the day and look forward to more inspiring events in 2025!

Speed networking

Mini-Festive Crafters & Creators Market

We were thrilled to welcome crafters and creators who had previously accessed business support through the Leeds Libraries Business and IP Centre to showcase their amazing products.

Craft fair

We’d like to shine a spotlight on one of our exhibitors, Kriti and Seema, who specialize in art and craft classes and workshops for children and adults, fostering creativity and mental wellness. They presented their collection of handmade articles called Hridaya – Heartfelt Creations, shared with love. Every piece in the collection is crafted with care by children and artists, offering a unique selection of handmade bags, canvases, wine glasses, cards, and more. By spreading the magic of handmade creations, they aim to inspire, connect, and bring meaning to every stroke and design.

Unwrapping the IP in Christmas Jumpers

It must be time to dust off a Christmas jumper. Christmas jumpers are a fashion staple this time of the year, but where does intellectual property fit in?

If you create a unique design, it can be protected by a registered design.  A good grasp of the fundamentals will help you to identify IP in your business and give you a competitive advantage. If you find some downtime this Christmas, complete the IPO online training tool IP Equip to understand the basics.

Book of the Month

A Christmas Carol

Did you know that a novella "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens was first published on 19th December 1843, with the first edition sold out by Christmas Eve. By 1844, the novella had gone through 13 printings and continues to be a robust seller more than 175 years later, and has been adapted for stage, television, film, and opera.

"A Christmas Carol" is a Christmas story, an ethical story, a story about Victorian society and traditions. The book is full of wonderful and entertaining surprises even for those who has read this story before.
