Unblocking your sink, bath, or toilet
Blockages in the home can often be resolved without the need for a plumber. Here is some information that will help you to attempt to remove blockages yourself.
Blocked sinks occur if food waste and cooking fats are allowed to go down the plug hole. It is your responsibility to keep sinks clear. If they do block up, or are draining away slowly, then it is easy to try and unblock them yourself. There are two ways to do this:
-
If you have a plunger: remove all the water from the sink bowl first using a cup or jug. Hold a rag tightly over the overflow pipe opening and then place the plunger over the drain hole and plunge up and down quickly to clear the blockage. Once clear, it is best to pour some household blockage cleaner down the waste to help prevent reoccurring.
-
If you don’t have a plunger: a simple way is to put three heaped teaspoons full of bicarbonate of soda down the plug hole and then pour 500ml of white vinegar onto this. Leave for 5 minutes, and then flush it out with boiling water from a kettle. Repeat this process if it doesn’t run completely clear the first time.
If your toilet is blocked, then you should take some easy steps to try and unblock it first before reporting it to us:
- The best way to do this is with a plunger but if you don’t have one, you can use a mop with a plastic bag placed over the head
- Always wear rubber gloves when trying to unblock a toilet. Before you try plunging it, first check for any obvious items that haven’t flushed like wipes or sanitary products. Remove any unflushed items and then try flushing the toilet to see if it is clear
- If there is still a blockage, plunge the toilet outlet several times with the plunger or mop and then try flushing the toilet.
If you can’t do this yourself and have nobody who can help you, or if you have tried and you can’t remove the blockage, please report a repair to us.
