Belle Isle Gala 6 July

It’s the Belle Isle Gala in just four weeks. Back for the first time since 2019 and with lots of attractions, the date of Saturday 6 July 12-3pm needs to go into your diaries, calendars and phones. It will be held at Windmill School and Parkside Fields – enter from Belle Isle Road opposite Springwell Academy.

Free attractions include four giant inflatables, climbing wall, sports taster sessions, a fire engine, ambulance and police van. There’s a wide variety of low cost stalls including food.

There will be displays from local dance, majorette and gym groups. The Lord Mayor of Leeds is attending and there will be a ceremony to rename Parkside Fields after the late rugby legend Colin Cooper.

Can you help on the day? Or would you like a stall? You can get in touch here as well as finding up to date information on the Gala.

News from BITMO's Board

BITMO’s Board met on 30 May. They reviewed BITMO’s finances and how the services are performing. The Board agreed to install three new community noticeboards in addition to the four existing ones. The new noticeboards will be on Belle Isle Road at Woodville Square (opposite the sorting office) at the Town Street shops and opposite Manorfield Hall on Newhall Chase. The Board considered the BITMO Community Fund that provides much needed household goods such as beds and cookers to people who are in hardship, and agreed that we will not normally fund repeat applications.

The Board want to make sure that we are offering the support that people need for getting access to the internet and using online services such as for blue badges, council tax support and Universal Credit. You may get a text message through a system called Voicescape, that we already use for rent account management. It will ask how you deal with online applications when you have to, and what support you need or want. We will report back to the next Board meeting with the results.

The Board is made up of 12 elected Belle Isle tenants, two of the Middleton Park Ward Councillors and up to four co-opted places – who could be local homeowners or people from the outside who bring experience in areas like finance or repairs.

Board meetings are open to the public (except at the end if there are confidential items like staffing or awarding contracts). You would be very welcome to attend. You can also raise questions for the Board to discuss. This must be done in advance using this form. Following the link you can also see the dates of meetings and read papers for all Board meetings.

Attending a Board meeting would be a great way to see if you would like to stand for election to become a Board Member yourself at the Annual General Meeting in September.

Update from BITMO’s Repairs Team

Heating and hot water repairs

Please note, during the milder months from the 1st of May until the 31st of October, if you report having no heating or hot water, our standard timescale to attend to your repair is within three working days. If you feel that there are specific needs that would require us to consider making reasonable adjustments to these timescales, please tell us.

Please don’t prop the block doors open!

New doors have been fitted to the 3-storey blocks with controlled entry fobs. These are sixteen blocks in Aberfield Drive, Winrose Approach, Aberfield Rise and the first Town Street block.

If the doors are propped open it causes the controlled entry switch to trip meaning the controlled entry no longer works and anyone can get into the building.

This then leaves the blocks insecure and BITMO has to pay to repair the doors – taking money out of the repairs budget.

So please don’t prop open the main or back doors to the 3-storey blocks.

Block door propped open

A block door propped open in Winrose Approach. Please close the door if you see this happening. We should also point out that the communal areas must be kept clean and clear and that any items left will be removed and disposed of.

What are Belle Isle’s assets?

Assets are things in the community we want to celebrate.

This could be things like

  • buildings
  • people
  • green spaces
  • businesses
  • organisations

that benefit the community and make Belle Isle a better place to live.

We have had lots of nominations – community centres like Manorfield Hall and the volunteers who run Belle Isle Senior Action. You can add your ideas – including uploading a photo if you can – by clicking on this link.
