The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund Briefing Event

Join us online to hear from Leeds Community Foundation and 100% Digital Leeds about The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund, made possible thanks to support from Leeds Digital Ball.

The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund will support the development and delivery of sustainable digital inclusion interventions in Leeds. We want people in Leeds to have the skills, support and equipment they need to be active online, now and in the future. Grants are up to £10,000 and applications for smaller amounts are welcome. 

During the event, we'll share information about The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund criteria and application process, as well as the support that 100% Digital Leeds can offer.

The event will be recorded, so even if you can't make the date you can still register and you'll be emailed the slides and recording afterwards.

Digital inclusion research project with Leeds Beckett University

Over the last 12 months, 100% Digital Leeds has worked with the Centre for Health Promotion Research at Leeds Beckett University on a research project funded by the British Academy.

The aim of the research was to understand how two city-wide programmes led by local authorities – 100% Digital Leeds and #CovConnects – contribute towards addressing digital inequality at a city-wide level, and how this impact can be measured.

The Hamara Centre is a community organisation supporting residents in Beeston. The organisation began offering digital inclusion support in 2019 and started working with 100% Digital Leeds with the development of Digital Health Hubs.

Autisticon 2024

Forum Central Learning Disability Awards

The Learning Disability Awards recognise and celebrate the amazing work that happens in Leeds to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities and autistic people. There are 100 free places for Voluntary, Community or Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations and their volunteers who have a learning disability. Edit it yourself - a practical guide to video editing

Aimed at arts and cultural organisations, in this webinar Dean Shaw, Tech Champion for Content Creation, will present how to use free editing tools to edit your videos. Dean will show you the whole editing journey, starting with transferring the footage from your phone to the editing tool and ending with the creation of the final video, ready to be posted on social media. Dementia, AI and simple tech tweaks to help - with AbilityNet and Alzheimer's Society

Research shows there are more than 944,000 people in the UK living with dementia. With people living longer, the number of people with dementia is increasing - now 1 in 11 people over the age of 65 have dementia in the UK. In this free webinar, expert speakers from AbilityNet will be joined by guest speakers from Alzheimer's Society and Recreo VR, to offer their advice for navigating the digital world with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or cognitive issues.

Northern College digital courses

First Steps in Digital, 11 - 12 July

This brand new course is intended to provide those who lack confidence using computers to take their first steps in the subject. The course lasts for two days and students will learn by doing, performing basic computer operations to learn new skills. 

Next Steps in Digital, 18 - 19 July

Next Steps in Digital builds on existing digital skills, participants will learn how to use several apps to create images and documents and build on those existing skills. The course lasts for two days and students will learn by creating content using their newfound skills.

Good Practice Mentor Team training

Leeds Older People's Forum partnered with three other charities to host the Good Practice Mentor (GPM) Team. The programme brings together legacy, learning and resources from Ageing Better, a seven year test and learn programme that worked to reduce social isolation and loneliness in people aged 50 plus. Upcoming training includes:

  • Understanding and addressing barriers to participation through comms.
  • Understand more about the psychology of loneliness and social isolation.

  • Importance of place in finding and engaging harder to reach older people.

Training and networking opportunities from Good Things Foundation

Good Things Foundation have a series of training and networking opportunities to support organisations in their digital inclusion offer. To attend, organisations need to be a member of their National Digital Inclusion Network. The network is free to join.

National Databank question and answer session

This session is for organisations who are not yet part of the National Databank. National Databank refresher session

This session is for organisations already accessing the National Databank. During this session Good Things Foundation will give you an overview of current offers, a demo of the National Databank and a reminder of processes. Digital champions training

13 June, 12:00 midday - 2:00pm, online

Digital champions provide direct support for people who don't have the skills or confidence to make the most out of the internet and their device. They support all kinds of people who need to learn digital skills and play an important role in motivating people to give digital a go.

This two-part course is for any volunteers or members of staff who provide frontline support to people who need support with digital.

Funding 

100% Digital Leeds are keen to support the development of any funding bids with a digital inclusion element, or to help you embed digital inclusion throughout your project. If you would like support contact us.

Some funding links will take you through to the Funding Leeds website and you will need to register to access the information. Once you have registered for free you will have access to a national database of funding sources and get regular email updates on your funding area of interests.

The National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) Announces ‘Largest Expansion in National Lottery Funding in 30 Years’

The National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF), the largest community funder in the UK, has published its new Corporate Plan covering the next three years (2024 -2027). The plan sets out ‘ambitious targets’ to deliver on its strategy to support what matters most to communities across the UK.

The NLCF aims to distribute at least a further £4 billion by 2030 to support activities that create resilient communities that are more inclusive and environmentally sustainable - activities that will strengthen society and improve lives across the UK.

Fix The Digital Divide Fund - Impact Grant

This grant is for members of the National Digital Inclusion Network to help them support more people who lack basic digital skills or access.

Amount: £3,000 (to support 60-90 people) or £6,000 (to support 120-150 people).

Deadline: 5 June 12:00 midday.

Fix The Digital Divide Fund - Capability Grant

This grant is for members of the National Digital Inclusion Network who want to add to or boost their current digital services.

Amount: £6,000

The Space - 2024 Commissioning Round

Commissions are available to arts and cultural organisations based in England to develop and deliver creative digital projects. Commissions provide an opportunity for arts and cultural organisations to deliver a creative project for online or in-person audiences and thus improve the accessibility of their work. The work could be video or audio project, or an interactive or immersive experience. In addition to funding, organisations can receive guidance in areas such as digital production, content distribution, audience development and online rights.

Amount: Commissions of between £4,000 and £15,000 are available. The maximum funding for audio projects is £8,000.

Deadline: 13 June.

West Yorkshire - Mayor's Safer Communities Fund

Grants are available to local not-for-profit groups in West Yorkshire for projects that address issues presenting in the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Plan 2021-2024.

Amount: £10,000.

Deadline: 13 June.

Better Community Business Network Grant Initiative

A small number of grants are available each year to small not-for-profit groups with projects that address a community issue or support a local community initiative; and provide benefits to the local community.

Amount: Grants of up to £3,000 are available. There is a total funding pot of £36,000 each year, with 12 grants awarded annually.

Deadline: 16 June.

Bentley Advancing Life Chances Small Grants Programme

Grants are available to support charitable organisations working with vulnerable, disadvantaged or under-represented communities in Leeds. 

Amount: Between £150 and £500.

Deadline: The grant is quarterly and the next deadline is 21 June, but please apply as soon as possible as the fund may close early due to demand.

UKSPF - Groundwork West Yorkshire Community Grants

WYCA Community Grants provide grants to organisations in the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector to support unemployed, economically inactive and socially excluded people from West Yorkshire to move closer to employment and/or digital inclusion.

Amount: £20,000. There is a possibility that some projects can be awarded a grant of up to £50,000 if you can demonstrate how the additional funding would be used to support more participants.

Deadline: The programme is open for applications now, with rolling grant panels throughout a 6 week period. There is a limited amount of funding available and the fund will close once sufficient applications have been received which meet the funding criteria. The programme is open to applications until 28 June.

Delivery Deadline: All project delivery must be completed by the end of December 2024. Therefore, organisations should already be engaging with a cohort of beneficiaries when applying for the grant, to ensure timely completion. Projects should aim to target people from priority groups, address need, and complement other local provision.

Wolfson Foundation

The Foundation aims to support excellence in the UK, generally through the funding of capital infrastructure and equipment in the fields of science and medicine, heritage, arts and humanities, education, and health and disability. 

Amount: Varies, up to £75,000.

Deadline: 1 July.

The Society Foundation

Grants are available to registered charities and charitable organisations across the UK that are seeking to help specific groups of people move towards paid employment. The funding can be used for:

  • Capacity building activities, including IT infrastructure and equipment.
  • Staff training and development
  • External consultancy/support.

Amount: A limited number of micro-grants of up to £2,500 are available each year.

Deadline: 8 July.

Hilden Charitable Fund

Grants are available for charitable organisations working in the areas of penal affairs and asylum seekers and refugees in the UK.

Amount: Grants will usually be in the range of £5,000 to £7,000 per year for up to two years.

Deadline: 11 July 3:00pm.

Worshipful Company of Information Technologists Charity

Grants are available for the development of innovative IT projects with a charitable or educational focus in the UK. 

Amount: Generally, grants of up to £15,000 are available. In exceptional circumstances grants of over £15,000 may be awarded.

Deadline: Applications can be submitted any time throughout the year and are considered four times per year. The next deadline is 31 July 5:00pm.

Seven Friends Foundation

Grants are available to support small registered charities and charitable causes that are unpopular or do not receive widespread attention within the UK, with particular focus on deprived areas including:

  • Asylum seekers and refugees
  • Migrant communities
  • Offenders and ex-offenders
  • People experiencing violence or abuse
  • Sex workers
  • Trafficking and modern slavery
  • Dependency or Addiction
  • LGBT+
  • Sexual and reproductive health.

Amount: Grants of between £300 and £3,000 are available. Most grants will be for less than £1,000. 

Deadline: 1 August.

Warburtons Families Matter Community Grants Programme

Small grants are available for local projects, activities and organisations that have charitable aims and that will be of real direct benefit to families. Funding is available for projects that are working towards one of Warburtons' outcome areas including:

Skills - supporting families to gain useful skills for life and work:

  • Developing useful life skills
  • Developing useful skills for employment.

Amount: £400.

Deadline: 5 August.

Arnold Clark Community Fund

Grants are available for UK registered charities and other not-for-profit organisations for projects, including those whose work directly supports those most affected by the cost-of-living crisis, which are embedded in the communities in which Arnold Clark operates.

Amount: £2,500.

Deadline: 31 December.

Barchester Healthcare Foundation

Grants are available for small local groups and small local charities to improve the quality of life and combat loneliness in older people as well as adults with a physical or mental disability.

Amount: From £100 to £2,500.

Holbeck Together Digital Hub

By appointment every Tuesday and Thursday

Run by Digital Coach Sean you can receive help with accessing online services, setting up e-mail or any questions you have about your mobile phone, tablet or other digital devices. If you’d like to book a one-to-one session email Holbeck Together or call 0113 245 5553.

Highrise Project digital skills sessions

Every Tuesday, between 2:00pm and 4:00pm, Under Armley Library, LS12 1UQ

Sign-up to free one to one in person sessions to build basic digital skills. Each session lasts 45 minutes. Book a one to one Highrise Project digital skills session via Eventbrite.

People Matters weekly wellbeing groups

Mondays and Fridays, 10:30am – 12:30pm, Barkston House LS11 9RT

People Matters is running weekly wellbeing groups all about different types of safety. There will also be crafts, social activities, games and exercises in the sessions.

The sessions will focus on:

  • Online safety
  • Safety in relationships
  • Discrimination and self-advocacy
  • Mental health
  • Money and scams
  • Crime

SIM gifting from Leeds Libraries 

To support people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, community hubs and libraries across Leeds have O2, Vodafone and Three mobile SIMs available with up to six months unlimited calls and texts plus data to help people stay in touch and get online. 

People can be signposted to Central Library, Armley Community Hub and Library, Reginald Centre Community Hub and Library, Compton Centre Community Hub and Library, Dewsbury Road Community Hub and Library.

Tablet lending from Leeds Libraries 

Leeds Libraries can support community organisations’ digital inclusion programmes by lending iPads with data to be used with service users. Please email Leeds Libraries to express an interest.

iPads are also available for individuals to borrow at Armley Community Hub and Library, Compton Centre Community Hub and Library, Headingley Community Hub and Library, Holt Park Community Hub and Library, Hunslet Community Hub and Library, Reginald Centre Community Hub and Library, Seacroft Community Hub and Library. People can be signposted to any of these sites to borrow an iPad for up to eight weeks. Proof of address is required to borrow a device.

Digital drop-ins at Leeds Libraries

Need help to use your tablet, smartphone or computer to try something new, say hello or get tech savvy? Every week there are several digital drop-ins at libraries around the city. Come along with your device or use a library PC and talk to friendly librarians who will help you get started. Find the dates and locations of the Digital Drop-ins on the Leeds Inspired website.

Volunteer training - have your say

The Lifelong Learning Centre and Digital Education Service at the University of Leeds are working together to create a short, online course for volunteers. The course will be free and will aim to equip adults in Leeds and West Yorkshire with a foundation to begin or develop their skills in volunteering.

The teams are consulting with local community partners to ensure that the course meets sector needs and the next step is to gain a better understanding of current volunteer training and induction practices.

Save the date - Get Online Week 2024

Get Online Week is Good Things Foundation's annual digital inclusion campaign that helps people learn digital skills through fun local events hosted by Network members. This year it’s taking place 14 - 20 October 2024. Find out more on the Get Online Week website.

Skills for Care unveils e-learning for digital skills in social care

A suite of e-learning modules for adult social care staff to build their digital skills has been made available under NHS England’s Digitising Social Care Programme. It has made the modules, which are free to access and described as ‘bitesize’, available through Skills for Care’s virtual learning environment.

They are aimed at helping learners develop a broad base of digital knowledge and skills for adult social care.
