Building a stronger, safer, greener Belle Isle

Deborah Kelly outside the BITMO office

It has been an amazing year for BITMO. Not only have we achieved the vast majority of our performance targets, being the top performer in Leeds across rent collection, net debt (amount owed by tenants) and void relet times (time homes are empty between tenants), but the work we do to support our community that focuses on wellbeing, health, and engagement is going from strength to strength.

We have record numbers of people engaging with activities in our community centre from free tuition in maths and English for primary school children, parent and toddler groups, free food and meals 4-5 times a week, community garden, community orchard, to supporting community groups who run sessions themselves. We host a healthy hearts programme, parenting course, a food bank, a digital together group, and the repair café and tool library. We run a cinema club for kids, one for retirement life residents and one for young people with sensory impairments, learning difficulties and autism spectrum traits. Our Board have approved £50,000 to spend on community-led green space improvements, and we are supporting sport and play workers to develop sessions on green spaces in the area. We are also supporting FREE adult fitness and kids’ dance classes on Wednesday evenings in partnership with DAZL – starting in May.

Our aim is to build a stronger, safer, greener community and to be tenant led in that endeavour. If you want to find out more, get involved or start up your own group our Community Development Team can help you.

Deborah Kelly, BITMO Chief Executive

Time for Spring Cleaning?

Some advice on how to get rid of waste and unwanted items in a safe and responsible way.

Garden waste: If you have a brown bin for garden waste, you can check your bin day and what items go in the brown bin.  If you don’t have a brown bin for garden waste, you can request a garden waste collection. Please do not burn your garden waste, which can be a nuisance for neighbours.

For all other information on bins, waste and recycling visit the main bins and recycling page or contact 0113 222 4406.

If you live in a flat, your waste should be disposed of in the bin areas of your block, NOT left on landings, stairwells, or outside of the blocks.

Thank you to all residents who dispose of their waste correctly.

Repair Cafe April 2024

It's the Belle Isle Repair Café on Saturday 20 April at 1-4pm at BITMO's GATE. Bring along anything that you have that is broken, torn or not working and our fixers will try to mend it. We can even do minor repairs to bikes! Please note we always need an adult to be present.

We also have free toasties, tea and coffee - it's fine just to come along and see what is happening.

If you have any ideas for the Belle Isle Gala, or would like to help, come along at 3pm during the repair café as we are holding a Gala planning meeting.

Here is April's programme for BITMO's GATE:

BITMO's GATE programme April 2024

Coming soon:
Adult fitness classes - starting May (evenings)
Dance classes for kids - starting in May (evenings)
English lessons for speakers of other languages - starting in June - Wednesdays during the school day.

Who is responsible for fences?

Tenants are responsible for their fences. This is true in the BITMO area and across all of Leeds. You must not remove hedges to replace them with fencing.

We will only repair or replace fencing if

  1. it is on the front boundary and the front is on a busy road or bus route AND there are children aged under seven, OR
  2. we get a referral from an Occupational Therapist because of the special needs of children living in the property.

BITMO will not consider complaints about being denied fencing repairs or replacements under the complaints policy unless the request meets one of the two conditions above.

Help with CV and interview skills

Need any help with your CV, job applications or preparation for interviews? Or know someone who does? Experienced staff from Mears will be at BITMO’s GATE on Thursday 18 April from 2-6pm to help. This support is for any job – not only repairs or jobs with Mears. There’s no need to book – just turn up on the day.

For jobs with Mears directly, you can go to their website.

And finally ....

Are you following us on Instagram?

Here is some useful information about keeping your windows safe.

BITMO's GATE is closed on Thursday May 2 as it is a polling station.

And last but not least a new Wednesday lunch time club at Manorfield Hall (top of Newhall Road, just down from Town Street).
