Tuesday           9am to 4pm
Wednesday      CLOSED
Thursday          9am to 4pm
Friday               9am to 4pm

Upcoming closure dates

We will be closed on from 4pm on Friday 22 December until 9am on Thursday 4 January 2024.

Campaigns

The PHRC will be supporting the following campaigns in January:

Check-In With Your Mate

Check in with your mate leaflet

The West Yorkshire Check-In With Your Mate (CIWYM) campaign aims to promote these conversations and to raise awareness of the factors and signs that may lead to suicide, inspiring people to start conversations about mental health with the men in their life - at home, in the community and at work - potentially saving lives.

Leaflet: Think your mate is bottling something up? (L165) is available to order from the PHRC.

Dry January

Dry January

Take on 31 days alcohol-free with Alcohol Change UK for a total body and mind reset. From better sleep and a mental health boost, to saving money and time - there's a whole lot to gain this Dry January.  More information can be found here

We have many resources here at the PHRC to use around alcohol awareness.  These include: -

Alcohol calorie and unit wheel (L293)

This is an easy-to-use, interactive device for measuring the alcoholic unit content and calories in the most commonly consumed alcohol brands. It contains units and calorie information for wine, champagne, ale, beer, lager, cider, alcopops, dark spirits, clear spirits, cream liqueurs, vermouth, and fortified wine. Contact information for Forward Leeds is also provided for those wanting more information, advice or support.

Like my Limit (P712)

This poster highlights Leeds-based alcohol facts, such as the number of days lost to handovers, and the cost to workforce performance and the economy. It also provides contact details for Forward Leeds, an alcohol and drug service available to everyone in Leeds.

Alcohol unit display (UNITSALCOHOL1 or HEAVYDRINKING1)

The 3d models in these displays are designed to help people understand how many units are in popular alcoholic drinks.

The Consequences of Alcohol Abuse (ALCOHOL)

This display shows what actually happens to organs of the body when alcohol is abused.

Spotlight on new resources

3 new boxed games

The Removing Barriers Game has been developed to help people learn about disability and the barriers faced by disabled people in everyday life.

Everybody's Different - many people are happy with the way they look, but almost everyone has at least one aspect of their physical appearance that they're not so keen on. Sometimes these anxieties can have an impact on their mental health and well-being. This game is suitable for children aged 9-12 and works best with between 4 to 8 players, divided into 2 teams.

The LGBT+ Game encourages players to discuss LGBT+ issues and to explore the barriers faced by LGBT+ colleagues.

Want to know more about …

Want to know more about ...logo

‘Want to know more about’ is a series of information sessions that cover topics that are important to you and your local community. The sessions, which are aimed at professionals to improve their awareness and practice around the subjects covered, are free of charge and are presented in an engaging manner by friendly and knowledgeable facilitators. Some WTKMA sessions are delivered online and others are delivered in person.

HIV: Treatment, Testing and Prevention

Thursday 8 February 2024, 10am to 11.30am

It has been more than 40 years since the first recorded case of AIDS in 1981, and since then globally 40.4 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses. HIV has gone from a terminal diagnosis to an easily managed condition that is impossible to pass onto others when on medication. However, there is still a high prevalence in late diagnosis, which can have a disastrous impact upon an individual’s outcomes. In addition, there are issues of stigma surrounding prevention methods, such a PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and testing for HIV. The only way to change this is education.

In this online session we will cover:

  • HIV facts and figures – the prevalence of HIV in Leeds and the UK
  • rates of late diagnosis and the impact of this
  • testing – what it involves and where to get tested in Leeds
  • PrEP – what it is and what it does
  • Fast-Track Cities – testing and prevention campaign

This webinar is suitable for anyone working or volunteering within organisations supporting individuals with their health and wellbeing, including health, social care and the third sector, and in particular those interested in or responsible for sexual health and HIV.

Communities of belonging around alcohol

Thursday 22 February 2024, 11am to 12:30pm

In this session we will discuss our recent research on the notion of ‘a community of belonging’ around alcohol, and how this can be applied to practice. The research explores how belonging may contribute to more, or less drinking, in these communities, and the possibilities for behaviour change within a community of belonging.

The research explores stories around belonging with members of marginalised and ethnically diverse groups, namely Polish, LGBTQ+ and South Asian communities, in rural and urban settings in Yorkshire and the Humber where alcohol may play a part in the group identity, either as social glue or source of stigma. The communities were chosen in conjunction with local partner agencies as identified priority areas in terms of alcohol harm, with the groups being generally missing from mainstream and specialist alcohol services with little known about their needs.

This webinar is suitable for anyone who works in, or is interested in, alcohol related services and harm reduction or is involved in promoting community wellbeing in any capacity.

This webinar will provide:

  • an introduction to the concept of belonging
  • an overview of the research process
  • key findings from the research
  • a model to explain the interaction of community belonging and alcohol
  • implications and recommendations for practice

The session will be facilitated by Peter Nelson, Ruth Bastin and Marelize Joubert from the Department of Social Work, Social Care and Community Studies at Sheffield Hallam University, and Sharon Taberrer from ARC Research.
