Highlights from 100% Digital Leeds


Here are some of the things that the 100% Digital Leeds team have been working on over the past month.

Digital Inclusion West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire Combined Authority has secured £746,000 in funding to create a digital inclusion programme that will help people and communities across the region. The programme will deliver the priority actions in the West Yorkshire Digital Skills plan.

Digital Inclusion West Yorkshire will build on the success of 100% Digital Leeds. The programme will use our community-based approach to digital inclusion as the template to develop local digital inclusion initiatives in Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

Leeds City Council's Integrated Digital Service remote monitoring trial

The Integrated Digital Service are currently conducting a remote monitoring trial using Luscii App. The pilot is supporting older people with health conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes to manage their own health better in the comfort of their home. The team is working with 100% Digital Leeds, local Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and GP practices to onboard up to 60 new patients. Find out more about the trial on the UK Authority website.

Supporting older people’s digital confidence with University of Leeds’s Writing Back project

Writing Back is an intergenerational digital pen pal project which pairs students at the University of Leeds with older residents across Yorkshire to exchange emails. The scheme was established to help tackle loneliness and social isolation but organisations supporting older people have found involvement in the scheme supports members to develop transferable digital skills and confidence. Bid Writing for the VCSE sector

7 December, 11am - 12 noon, online

How to craft successful bids to secure funding for your organisation. This webinar will provide you with the knowledge to compose persuasive bids that distinguish your organisation and secure the funding necessary for its success. Book onto the webinar via the Teams website.

Applying for small grants

19 December, 9:45am - 12:45pm, Stringer House, 34 Lupton Street, LS10 2QW

This Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL) course will help your group to apply successfully for small grants of a few hundred pounds up to around £10,000 to help run and expand your activities and services. VAL will identify how best to approach a range of funders by looking at what makes a successful application form and understanding how they will be assessed. Training and networking opportunities from Good Things Foundation

Good Things Foundation have a series of training and networking opportunities to support organisations in their digital inclusion offer. To attend, organisations need to be a member of their National Digital Inclusion Network. The network is free to join.

Digital Skills for Employability Using Learn My Way

This event hosted by the Good Thing Foundation's National Digital Inclusion Network will introduce Geraint Turner from Swansea MAD who will share their organisation's approach to supporting the learning of skills needed to get job ready. Book onto Digital Skills for Employability Using Learn My Way on Eventbrite.

Facilitation tips for digital skills training

14 December, 10am, online

Wondering how to facilitate a group learning session? In this session from Good Thing Foundation's National Digital Inclusion Network, Emily from Job4Me will share facilitation tips for digital skills training. Sign up to Facilitation tips for digital skills training on Eventbrite.

Inclusive AI - How can AI fix the digital divide? 

Good Thing Foundation's National Digital Inclusion Network hosted an event with leading tech strategists and community leaders to discuss what advancements in AI could mean for digitally excluded people. The recording is now available on the Good Things Foundation's website.

Some funding links will take you through to the Funding Leeds website and you will need to register to be able to access the information. Once you have registered for free you will have access to a national database of funding sources and get regular email updates on your funding area of interests.

Leeds Community Foundation - transforming mental health grants city-wide

Grants for initiatives from large and medium-sized organisations to support people with complex mental health needs in Leeds

Amount: Grants between £30,000 and £50,000 are available for up to one year.

Deadline: 8 December

Leeds Community Foundation - transforming mental health grants local responses

Grants for initiatives from large and medium-sized organisations to support people with complex mental health needs living in localities covering one or more local care partnership area.

Amount: Grants between £10,000 and £20,000 are available for up to one year.

Money Saving Expert (MSE) Charity

MSE Charity gives grants to UK not-for-profit organisations that deliver activities which make a lasting impact on how people think, behave and manage their money.

Amount: £8,000

Chance to win £500 from the National Digital Inclusion Network

Good Things Foundation's network survey is now live and you can have the chance to win one of three Curry’s vouchers to buy equipment for your organisation. By sharing your thoughts and experiences the network can improve the services and support they provide. Complete the survey on the Good Things Foundation's website by 10 December to be in with a chance of winning.

The Fore 

Funding and support for small charities and social enterprises across the UK to grow, strengthen or become more efficient or resilient. The unrestricted funding can be used for any purpose, including core costs and capital funding. The grant could help, for example, an organisation grow, increase internal capacity, serve new beneficiary groups and become more sustainable or more efficient. 

Registration for spring 2024 opens 6 December. 

Amount: Up to £30,000 which may be spread over one to three years.

Deadline: 13 December

The Fat Beehive Foundation

The funding is intended to support the creation of websites or digital products that enable small charities to carry out their work in a more efficient and effective way, resulting in positive social benefit.

Amount: £2,500

Deadline: 5 January

Leeds Community Foundation - Jimbo's Fund

The Fund aims to support local projects tackling disadvantage and hardship. Support is available to ensure community spaces are kept open, plus more targeted support for people experiencing food and fuel poverty, and other adverse effects of the cost-of-living crisis. Applications are encouraged for activities to benefit those facing hardship in Leeds, particularly those living in the postcode areas of LS8, LS9, LS14 and LS15.

Amount: Grants of between £1,000 and £20,000 are available for one year.

Deadline: 6 January

Ageism Action Day: Micro-grants for Age-friendly Communities

Centre for Ageing Better is launching an annual Ageism Action Day on 20 March with the theme 'See and be Seen' and as part of this they are running a pilot programme offering a number of micro-grants for community groups and local voluntary sector organisations based within Age-friendly Communities.

Amount: Grants of up to £500 are available, with an additional up to £150 to cover anything needed to make the event or activity more accessible. The lower limit for applications is £75. 

Organisations can also apply for independent strategic-level pro-bono help for their IT projects from WCIT.

Deadline: The deadline for applications is 10 January but they may have to close early if they receive a high level of demand.

Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT) Charity

The Charity works with a wide range of non-profit organisations and aims to help them get the best from IT. It is committed to strengthening communities and using the power of technology for good.

Amount: Generally, grants of up to £15,000 are available. In exceptional circumstances grants of over £15,000 may be awarded.

Organisations can also apply for independent strategic-level pro-bono help for their IT projects from WCIT.

Deadline: 22 January

Lloyds Bank Foundation (Specialist Programme)

Grants are available to strengthen the capacity and capabilities of small, local specialist charities supporting people facing complex issues. Applicants must be providing in-depth services in one of the following eight themes:

  • Addiction
  • Asylum Seekers and Refugees
  • Care Leavers
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Homelessness
  • Offending
  • Sexual Abuse and Exploitation
  • Trafficking and Modern Slavery.

Amount: Grants of £75,000 (unrestricted and over 3 years).

Deadline: 25 January

Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust

Funding is intended to support those in society who face the greatest challenges and whose opportunities are the most limited. In 2024 the funding focus will be on disability specifically employment and training to ensure better access, and food poverty.

Amount: The Trust awards grants of either £1,000 or £5,000 depending on the grant round. The level of grant awarded is determined by the income of the charity.

Deadline: 29 February

Changes to National Lottery Awards for All

The National Lottery Community Fund has doubled the amount of funding available to grassroots projects, in what it’s calling the biggest change in National Lottery funding for a generation. Awards for All now has a maximum limit of £20,000 and has doubled the funding period to two years. Find out more about the changes on the National Lottery website.

Amount: Groups can apply for funding under £20,000, or over £20,001, depending on what they want to do.

Deadline: Ongoing. Apply at least 16 weeks before you want to start the activities or spend any of the money.

Clothworkers' Foundation digital infrastructure grants

The Clothworkers’ Foundation has recently expanded the eligibility criteria for their open grants programmes and now offer capital grants for digital infrastructure projects and will consider applications for products and software (such as websites, databases and apps). They are hosting a webinar on this topic on 7 December 10 - 11am which can be booked via Eventbrite.

Amount: For larger projects (£100,000+), the Foundation generally funds 10% or more of the balance to be raised. 

For smaller projects (with a balance of less than £10,000), the Foundation generally funds between 50% and 100% of the balance.

Deadline: Rolling.

Re-engage weekly health and fitness sessions on Zoom tailored for older people

Re-engage are running weekly health and fitness sessions for people aged 75 or over designed for people living in West Yorkshire who would like to connect with other people and take part in an activity such as chair yoga, tai chi, or seated pilates.  

The weekly exercise sessions are delivered by trained professionals aimed at keeping people active from the comfort of their own homes.

Everyone should be able to shop online safely and confidently. Learn My Way, Good Things Foundation's free, beginner-friendly digital skills learning platform, is packed with topics on spending money online and most importantly, online safety. SIM gifting from Leeds Libraries 

To support people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, community hubs and libraries across Leeds have O2, Vodafone and Three mobile SIMs available with up to 6 months unlimited calls and texts plus data to help people stay in touch and get online. 

People can be signposted to Central Library, Armley Community Hub and Library, Reginald Centre Community Hub and Library, Compton Centre Community Hub and Library, Dewsbury Road Community Hub and Library.

Tablet lending from Leeds Libraries 

Leeds Libraries can support community organisations’ digital inclusion programmes by lending iPads with data to be used with service users. Please email Leeds Libraries to express an interest. 

iPads are also available for individuals to borrow at Armley Community Hub and Library, Compton Centre Community Hub and Library, Headingley Community Hub and Library, Holt Park Community Hub and Library, Hunslet Community Hub and Library, St George's Centre Community Hub and Library, Reginald Centre Community Hub and Library, Seacroft Community Hub and Library. People can be signposted to any of these sites to borrow an iPad for up to 8 weeks. Proof of address is required to borrow a device.

MoneySavingExpert Academy of Money

The Open University has joined forces with MoneySavingExpert to produce a new free course that will give people the skills and knowledge to master their finances.

WalkSafe Leeds

Digital Youth Index 2023

The Nominet Digital Youth Index is an annual benchmarking study of over 4,000 8 to 25 year-olds in the UK. The report comprises five pillars:

  • Wellbeing – how being online relates to physical and mental health and
    happiness.
  • Safety – perceptions of ability to avoid harm or risk online.
  • Skills – ability to navigate digital spaces and carry out different tasks.
  • Connectivity – how young people access the internet whether via wifi, mobile data or another method and how this differs based on place and time.
  • Access – critical devices required to use the internet. This varies for different groups of young people based on their needs.

State of Ageing 2023-24 report

The Centre for Ageing Better's State of Ageing report paints the most detailed picture yet of the older population in England. The team have also spoken to older people about their lives and seen their analysis of the data reflected in older people's experiences of ageing. UK Consumer Digital Index 2023

The Consumer Digital Index is the UK’s largest measure of digital and financial lives. The report uses a blend of transactional and survey data allowing data-matching of behaviours with attitudes.

This year’s report also includes the 2023 UK Essential Digital Skills benchmark; a measure of the fundamental tasks needed to access the online world including the essential digital skills needed for life and work. Access the Consumer Digital Index on the Lloyds Bank website.

Digital Poverty Alliance - two year on report

Director of Public Health annual report

Skillify digital self-assessment

Skillify is a test to help you understand your level of digital skills. At the end you can register to save your results (so you can see your progress in future) and see a range of suggested free or low-cost courses.
