Welcome to the latest edition of the Leeds Public Health Resource Centre newsletter, which contains information for anyone with a responsibility for, or professional interest in, public health or promoting health and wellbeing in Leeds.
 It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Nicki Lumb (pictured on the left) and Lisa Balman (pictured on the right) to the post of Health Improvement Resource Assistant at the PHRC.
Nicki and Lisa will be sharing the role with Lisa Jennings and Naomi Richmond who both joined us at the start of the year.

Want to know more about …
 ‘Want to know more about’ is a series of information sessions that cover topics that are important to you and your local community. The sessions, which are aimed at professionals to improve their awareness and practice around the subjects covered, are free of charge and are presented in an engaging manner by friendly and knowledgeable facilitators. Some WTKMA sessions are delivered online, and others are delivered in person.
Who’s playing who? Football and gambling harms
Thursday 3 November 2022, 11am to 12pm
Harmful gambling can have a devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities. It is exacerbated by the shame and stigma associated with asking for help.
The aim and hope of Leeds Community Gambling Service is that by working collaboratively we can help to reduce the friction in having supportive and proactive conversations.
Harmful gambling will be of heightened concern in the coming months, with the cost-of-living crisis and the forthcoming football World Cup.
Leeds Community Gambling Service want to ensure we are supporting other services by increasing confidence when talking about gambling.
The training will cover:
- types of gambling - including more emerging trends
- risks and harms
- impact on affected others
- speaking with confidence about gambling and the support available
- referral process and what Leeds Community Gambling Service offer as a service
- harmful gambling campaign as part of the Football World Cup
This online session will be delivered by Bryn Mostyn - Team Leader at GamCare, and George Richardson - Training and Engagement Lead at GamCare.
Please note that this session was previously advertised as an in-person event with the title ‘Gambling harms and the support available’. This session will now be online and start at 11am.

Abortion Services in Leeds
Tuesday 22 November 2022, 2pm to 3pm
There are safe and legal options for ending a pregnancy. In England you can legally have an abortion at up to 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy, however the what, when, where and how can be confusing.
Protecting the rights of pregnant people to make informed choices has never been more important.
In this session we welcome you to engage with our termination of pregnancy providers in the city.
The session will cover:
- what is offered in the city for people who want to end their pregnancy or are unsure about their choices
- how our providers support the choices of pregnant people
- myths about abortion dispelled
- how you can support pregnant people to access these services
This online session will be delivered by representatives from MSI Choices UK, BPAS (British Pregnancy Advisory Service), National Unplanned Pregnancy Advisory Service (NUPAS), Women’s Health Matters and the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board
Please note that this session will proceed with a firmly pro-choice stance and any members joining the meeting must respect this stance, this will not be a space to debate the validity or a person’s right to access free, safe and legal abortion.
