News Bulletin - September 2022

Queen ELizabeth

Since Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II launched Child Friendly Leeds 10 years ago, it has been fantastic to see that ambition grow. In reaching this special birthday, there has been so much to celebrate! From ‘Child Friendly Leeds Live’ celebrations, to ‘Baby Week’, and the ‘Child Friendly Leeds Awards’; events have been held that both create special memories for thousands of children and young people and bring together a wide range of professionals and child friendly organisations. A variety of city-wide competitions have done everything from keeping children active and engaged during lockdowns, to reshaping our city centre, so that it better suits the needs of children and families. And even led to Leeds achieving the first ever National Leadership Award for Public Services.

Our Child Friendly Leeds commitment remains strong as ever and I am immensely proud of the partnerships that have developed across the city between Child Friendly Leeds Ambassadors and services working with families. We remain determined to put children and young people at the centre of everything we do and their voices will continue to shape our priorities and plans for years to come!

- Councillor Fiona Venner, Executive Member for Adult and Children’s Social Care and Health Partnerships

The 12 wishes for a Child Friendly City

The voices and views of children and young people are at the heart of making Leeds a child friendly city.  When Leeds first set out its vision, we listened to the ideas of thousands of young people of all different ages. They told us what they thought would make Leeds a better city for them to play, live and grow up in and their feedback was grouped together to form our 12 wishes. The Child Friendly Leeds 12 wishes have been refreshed in 2022 and were developed based on consultation data from over 80,000 children and young people in the city. The wishes are aspirational and provide a clear insight into their views on what will make Leeds a better city.

Museum CFL 12 Wishes

Throughout our birthday month, the launch of the wishes took place at Leeds City Museum. Over 500 visitors including local and international families, school groups and colleagues from Leeds went to find out more. Families visiting Leeds from Oman, Chicago, Poland, Indiana and comments such as “Really impressed hearing about Children’s wishes are at the forefront of Leeds as a city”. For each wish, we hope to develop an action plan and share the wishes so the whole city can get behind them. Please get in touch to find out more.

Cooked with Love: World recipes without borders

Cooked with love CFL

The book’s creation has been a long-term wish of the council’s Children’s Social Services team, who have worked closely with young and unaccompanied asylum seekers in the city. Child Friendly Leeds was able to provide key support to the project by introducing the team to The British Library, which have worked nationally to improve opportunities for children and young people. Together, they facilitated five cohorts of young people to cook together and learn about each other’s lives before they arrived in the UK. These sessions were then curated into the book. The fantastic partnership project was featured in the Financial Times and The Guardian!
