 Every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK, making it one of the largest environmental health risks we face. Air pollution can lead to lung disease, heart disease, dementia and strokes, so it’s vital we work together to improve air quality.
Walking, cycling or getting the bus to your workplace can help to improve air quality for the local community and reduce the risk to our health. Global Action Plan has created a walking for clean air toolkit and you can find more walking, cycling and bus resources at WalkItRideIt.com

Community artwork at Kirkgate Market
To celebrate Clean Air Day, Leeds Civic Trust is creating a community work of art that showcases what we think Leeds as a ‘clean air city’ should look like. It’s not too late to get involved! Come along to a community drop-in session to share your vision. People across Leeds have joined in to create the collaborative collage of ideas, which you can see at Kirkgate Market until the end of June.
Mindful canal walk at Kirkstall Forge
Join the Canal & River Trust on a mindful walk along the canal, starting at Kirkstall Forge, to raise awareness of Clean Air Day. A simple circular walk to the canal and back, the event includes a chance to learn relaxing breathing techniques, spot wildlife and immerse yourself in nature. Meet at Butler’s Café, Kirkstall Forge ready to start the walk for 12:30pm.
HiveMind at Trinity Leeds
HiveMind, a contemporary dance act exploring the life of honeybees, will be performed at Trinity Leeds shopping centre at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 on Thursday 16 June. Organised by Leeds Civic Trust and SAIL, the performance highlights the positive steps we can all take to reduce the impact of air pollution on both people and insects.
Ramblers historic walk
Leeds Ramblers Group has organised a walk around historic Leeds to mark Clean Air Day. Come along to find out more about Leeds's industrial history, get some fresh air and discover how walking boosts your health and happiness. Starting at the junction of The Headrow and Briggate, this circular route will take one hour.
Schools BikeRegister Event
We’ll be running a free BikeRegister event for teachers, parents and pupils at schools across Leeds, in partnership with West Yorkshire Police. The schools include Westerton Primary School, Ninelands Primary School, Kerr Mackie Primary School and Beeston Hill St Luke’s C of E Primary School. Bring your bike to get it registered on the national police database. BikeRegister deters thieves and helps the police track down your bike if it does get stolen. Click here to find out how it works.
