Welcome to the latest edition of the Leeds Public Health Resource Centre newsletter, which contains information for anyone with a responsibility for or professional interest in public health or promoting health and wellbeing in Leeds.

Farewell Sadaf

Goodbye & Good Luck

Our amazing friend and colleague Sadaf Afzal will be leaving us next week, having been a firm fixture of the PHRC and Leeds Public Health since she joined the team in early 2008.

Sadaf has brought such warmth, friendliness, and an unflappable can-do attitude to her role at the PHRC, whether that be organising open days, fulfilling leaflet and poster orders, attending events, or answering queries from you - our customers. Aside from being the creative force behind many of our open days, Sadaf was also instrumental in delivering many of our public health campaigns.

If you’ve ever emailed, phoned, or come into the centre, you are sure to have had the pleasure of engaging with Sadaf. She will be sorely missed. We wish Sadaf the very best in her new role and for her future.

If you would like to send a message to Sadaf to wish her goodbye and good luck, please email phrc@leeds.gov.uk. Sadaf will be with us until next Wednesday 1 June 2022.

Want to know more about …

Want to know more about ...logo

‘Want to know more about’ is a series of information sessions that cover topics that are important to you and your local community. The sessions, which are aimed at professionals to improve their awareness and practice around the subjects covered, are free of charge and are presented in an engaging manner by friendly and knowledgeable facilitators. WTKMA sessions are currently delivered online.

Air pollution

Thursday, 26 May 2022, 10:30am to 11:30am

Poor air quality is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK, as long-term exposure to air pollution can cause chronic conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as lung cancer, leading to reduced life expectancy.

To help mark Clean Air Day in June, this session will address the issue of air pollution, raising awareness of the types of pollutants, their harmful effects and how we can support communities to improve their health by modifying behaviours and minimising their exposures to air pollutants.

The session will specifically address:

  • what air pollution is and the types of pollutants
  • the health effects of air pollution
  • the data gathered nationally and locally and what this means
  • air pollution and its relationship with vulnerability and inequalities
  • what we can do about air pollution and how you can help yourself

The session will be aimed at all colleagues in the public health wider workforce including frontline workers and third sector staff.

It will be presented by Public Health Specialists (Leeds City Council), Environmental Health, and Office of Health and Disparities (formally Public Health England).

Visit our website to book your place.

Ongoing issue with PHRC's phone line

Unfortunately, we are still currently experiencing an issue with our phone line, which is resulting in some calls to the centre being cut off and is likewise affecting our ability to return some calls. If you are unable to reach us by phone, please contact us by email. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
