International comparisons of life expectancy

Female life expectancy in the UK overall was 83.1 years in 2018, below the OECD average of 83.4 years. This puts the UK 25th out of 38 OECD countries. Read more.
Health and care for older adults during the pandemic

The Commonwealth Fund’s 2021 International Health Policy survey asked 18,989 older adults across 11 countries about their health and health care between March and June 2021. This included 1,876 people in the UK. The Health Foundation reports on the findings from a UK perspective. Read more.

Keep the size of your waist to less than half of your height, updated NICE draft guideline recommends

People are being encouraged to keep their waist measurement to less than half their height to reduce the risk of potential health problems, according to recommendations in an updated NICE draft guideline. Read more.
NHS COVID-19 vaccinations available now in Leeds for all 5 -11 year olds

The NHS in Leeds has begun offering COVID-19 vaccinations to 5 – 11 year-olds. This follows the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation’s (JCVI) recommendation that all 5-11 year-olds be offered the covid vaccination to boost immunity and increase their protection against any future waves of Covid. Hot weather health warnings are not getting through to people at risk

Warnings about hot weather are not being heard by people at risk. Most do not see themselves as vulnerable to heat, and do not take action to protect themselves. A recent survey found they are more likely to protect themselves against sunburn during heatwaves, than against heat. Read more.
Frail older people and those living in deprived areas remain at risk from COVID-19, even after vaccination

Vaccination against COVID-19 is highly successful at reducing severe illness and death in the population, but people still get infected after vaccination. New research also shows that frail older people, and those who live in deprived areas, are more at risk of infection after vaccination than other groups. The researchers urge family and friends to remain cautious around these vulnerable groups of people. Read more.
