Old News: Read All About It!
The news has shaped the world we live in for centuries. Today we carry it everywhere we go.
In this workshop we will explore Leeds Library’s historic newspaper collections, dating back to the 17th century. Find out more about the different ways news has been reported since the English Civil War through to the present day.
We will also discuss what makes the news where you live? How does a local story become a headline grabber or how does someone make it into the history books? Join us at Boston Spa Library on Tuesday 5 April.
Disabled Activists in the News
In this talk, we’ll hear from Gill Crawshaw and Ruth Malkin, prominent DAN activists in Leeds and Bradford in the 90s, about why the network aimed to engage with the press on their own terms. They will be talking to Steve Graby from Leeds Disabled People’s Organisation about how disabled people are represented in the news - and whether that is different today. Join us at Leeds Central Library on Wednesday 6 April.
Make sure to visit the Breaking The News exhibition in Room 700, Leeds Central Library before it closes this Thursday 7 April. To find out more about the exhibition and to book onto one of the talks visit: leedsinspired.co.uk/collection/breaking-news
