Leeds Libraries Newsletter - March 2022

Welcome to Leeds Libraries newsletter

Welcome to the March edition of our newsletter – it feels like spring has finally arrived. This month we're catching up with Breaking the News, sharing what's on for families, highlighting creative workshops in our Drawing Room and celebrating International Women's Day.

If you're not already, make sure you're following us on social media to get the latest news and see what we're up to.

Breaking The News Exhibition

The news has shaped the world we live in for centuries. Today we carry it everywhere we go. The Breaking the News exhibition, in partnership with the British Library, examines the vital role it plays in all our lives. Running throughout March you will be able to delve into newspapers dating back to the 17th century, explore radical and alternative publications, and discover mysterious news cuttings full of supernatural stories.

Visit Room 700, Leeds Central Library from Monday 28 February - Thursday 7 April. Find more information here: leedsinspired.co.uk/events/breaking-news-exhibition

Carry on reading for highlights from the events programme running alongside the exhibition.

Reputation

Sarah Vaughan is the author that everyone is talking about, with the hotly anticipated political thriller Anatomy of a Scandal, starring Sienna Miller and Michelle Dockery, coming to Netflix on April 15th and her new novel Reputation receiving hit reviews and appearing on nearly every ‘must read’ list this month.

Sarah Vaughan will be joining us in conversation with journalist and novelist David Mark on Thursday 10 March. This is currently her only tour date in the region so don’t miss out on a ticket to hear her talk about Reputation and her experiences of being a journalist as part of our Breaking the News programme of events.

Books will be available to buy and have signed by the author.

Tickets are £5 with a complementary drink on arrival: Book now.

International Women's Day

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we are sharing some of our favourite books by women writers:

  • The Sound Mirror by Heidi James is a stunning story about class, belonging and trauma across three generations of women in the same family, it was one of the best novels of 2020.
  •  Assembly by Natasha Brown is easily one of the best books of 2021, this concise, searing indictment of the hostile environment as seen through the eyes of a black woman working in high finance is an absolutely essential read.
  • We That Are Young by Preti Taneja is a dazzling, virtuosic retelling of the King Lear story, set in the vividly drawn world of modern-day India, this is a book to be truly savoured.
  • Sweet Home by Wendy Erskine is a marvellous collection of short stories and is already recognised as a classic. Look out for her new collection Dance Move, coming to the Leeds Libraries catalogue soon.
  • Coming Undone by Terri White is a brave and brutal memoir from former Empire editor Terri White. A tough and confronting read about the devastating impact of childhood trauma.

You can reserve these titles for free and pick up them up from your local library, leeds.gov.uk/libraries.

Take a look at some of our International Women's Day featured events:

Suffrage & The City

Using photographs from the Leodis archive we will follow the footsteps of the women who paved the way, and won the right to vote, for so many women.

The talk will show where they lived, campaigned, rioted, and were imprisoned in their quest for equality.

Author talk: Jacqueline Golding

Jacqueline Golding is an entrepreneur of 11 years and a first-time author with her debut book ‘The Diaries of Menopausal Women’. She has been praised for her encouragement of other women to own their truths and empower their sisters in their menopausal journeys.
