Coming up
Breaking the news
This February we will bring you a celebration of regional news and its increasing significance at the heart of communities all over the UK.
In partnership with the BBC and the British Library, the programme will launch on Thursday 24 February with a live streamed event from Leeds Central Library. The event will explore the interconnection between the personal and the national, looking at how as individuals we have a voice to tell our own stories and influence a bigger picture.
We will host an exhibition featuring items from our collections and events with some very special guests. More information to follow within our February newsletter.

Learn in the Library
We have developed a menu of options for learning within Leeds Libraries, so if you received a new digital device for Christmas or want to learn how to start a new business this year, we have the support you need.
 Develop your digital skills
Need help to use your tablet, smartphone or computer to try something new, say hello or get tech savvy?
Book onto First Steps with Digital, our three-week course for beginners with our friendly librarians.
Or drop into a #Digital121 session to learn how your device can help you improve your health, access library services to read eBooks and magazines online and even save you money.
If you or anyone you know could benefit from developing digital skills, you can find out more about when and where the sessions will be taking place by visiting the What’s On In Leeds Libraries page on the Leeds Inspired website.

In the words of Maya Angelou; “You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
Explore, create and be inspired by Art Library collections with our Drawing Room programme of workshops. You will find everything from a 4 week introduction to drawing and life drawing course to curve stitch and visible mending. We also have regular activities including Drop In and Draw and Craft Group, pick up those pencils and start a new hobby with us! Find out more here.
New Year, new book
You can enjoy reading and listening to books, newspapers and magazines in different formats. To get started, sign in to BorrowBox or Libby with your library card number and PIN. If you're unsure of your PIN you can email leeds.libraries@leeds.gov.uk or phone 0113 378 5005.
Here are some top tips to make listening or reading easier:
- Everyone listens at different speeds so you can alter the playback speed to enjoy at your own pace
- Add a sleep timer to stop playing after a certain time - great for listening in bed
- Listen to BorrowBox e-books with Apple VoiceOver for the visually impaired
increase/decrease the size of the text choose a font, including a special dyslexic font
- Change the colour scheme, including night mode (white text on black background) so it is easier to read in direct light (outside) or at night time
- Alternatively, you can just zoom in with your fingers on the screen to increase the text size.
Visit abilitynet.org.uk to find more tips on accessibility and Niche Academy for online tutorials on using Borrowbox and Libby.
