HIV: the other pandemic
Thursday 18 November 2021, 11am to 12 midday
The definition of a pandemic is an outbreak of a disease that has spread across several countries or continents. It has been 40 years since the first recorded case of AIDS in 1981, since then 36.3 million people globally have died from AIDS-related illnesses, 680,000 of them in 2020. HIV has gone from being a terminal diagnosis to an easily managed condition that is impossible to pass onto others when on medication. However the biggest challenge has remained unchanged for 40 years: HIV disproportionally affects people in vulnerable populations that are often highly marginalised and stigmatised. One way to change this is education.
The session will cover:
- HIV facts and figures – looking at HIV prevalence in Leeds, the UK and how it relates globally
- HIV prevention – the prevention tools we have available
- HIV testing – who needs to be tested, how often, and where can they go?
- HIV support – what Skyline can offer to support those living with HIV and what you can do to support people living with HIV
This webinar is suitable for people working within health, social care or third sector, or anyone who wants to know more about HIV in society today.
The session will be delivered by Becky Pullin and Becki Pugh from BHA Leeds Skyline - a HIV support and prevention service.

T2 Weight Support Services in Leeds
Tuesday 7 December 2021, 10.30am to 11.30am
It is widely known that there have been increasing numbers of people living with excess weight globally. This is due to a complex interplay of multiple socio-economic, genetic, psychological and environmental factors that affect daily living and health. Evidence shows that many people welcome talking about their weight when raised appropriately and sensitively.
The session aims to help raise awareness and understanding of how to talk about weight and the various routes available for weight support in Leeds.
The session will cover:
- tips and hints to have healthy conversations about weight
- what is a T2 Weight Support Service
- what services are available in Leeds
This session will be delivered by Laura Keighley (Leeds City Council), Teah Renton (One You Leeds), Amy Livingstone (Leeds Rhinos Foundation), and Serena Coultress (Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust).
Visit the WTKMA page to book your place on this webinar.
