Welcome to the first edition of our bulletin providing local and national safeguarding information for anyone working with adults with care and support needs in Leeds.
If you are not familiar with Leeds Safeguarding Adults Board we are a statutory body made up of a range of organisations working to prevent and end the abuse and neglect of adults with care and support needs in Leeds.
Today, 21 June, is the start of West Yorkshire Safeguarding Week and our focus is on self-neglect. In this bulletin we have provided a link to new resources to support you and your colleagues when working with people who self-neglect.
We are also pleased to tell you about our new Exceptional Risk Forum that has been established in recognition that sometimes, despite the best efforts of agencies to work together to intervene and provide support to someone, an exceptional risk to their safety can remain.
In future bulletins we will include further articles to support you to safeguard adults, such as changes to national and local policies, our events, examples of good safeguarding practices in Leeds and more learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews.
In closing I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who is working so hard supporting people in Leeds to be safe. Your efforts will be making a huge difference to people's lives. Please continue being aware, be vigilant and seek advice if something doesn’t seem right.
I hope that you will find this bulletin useful. Please share it with your team / colleagues and subscribe to receive future editions.

It's a fantastic opportunity for us all to help people to be safe from abuse, neglect and self-neglect.
In Leeds our theme for this year's Safeguarding Week is self-neglect.
We know that supporting people who self-neglect can be difficult and we have provided some new resources on our website to support you and your colleagues, including:
- Self-Neglect Policy developed in 2020 with best practice principles based on the national research
- Always Care - a one page guide with learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews
- Always Care video - people in Leeds give key messages about supporting adults who self neglect, from Safeguarding Adults Reviews
We're asking organisations and services in Leeds to do at least one thing, if possible, to promote awareness and understanding of self-neglect. Don't forget to tell us about your Safeguarding Week activities using our social media and email links at the end of this bulletin.
It is important that people know how they can get support to be safe from abuse, neglect & self-neglect.
People living in Leeds helped us create our posters and leaflets. They're available to download from our website. If you can, please display them and share with people using your service, or in your network.

Leaflets are available in community languages.
We spotted one of our posters in the front window at Holbeck Together's centre.

Do you run or attend a community organisation or group? Could you host one of our talks?
To help raise awareness of safeguarding we're providing talks for members of the public. We cover the different types of abuse and neglect, adults who may be at risk and how to get help and support.
We are happy to attend any event or activity. We've given talks at coffee mornings, lunch clubs, bingo sessions and exercise classes, and we've had nice feedback:
“A difficult subject communicated well and nicely paced. Thank you.” “Extremely informative, clear, and easy to follow”
We can deliver talks in person, or via Zoom.
Our talks are free and can be arranged for any time Monday to Friday.

As a Board we recognise that there is a lot of experience and knowledge in Leeds around safeguarding adults.
Our virtual Network provides opportunities for people to give us feedback and suggestions about our work, comment on documents and leaflets, and help us plan what we do in the future. We have over 200 members.
It won't take up much of your time. It's all done by e-mail or survey and may only be a couple of times a year depending on what we are working on, but the value of your input is always very important to us.
The Exceptional Risk Forum has been established in recognition that sometimes, despite the best efforts of agencies to work together to intervene and provide support to someone, an exceptional risk to their safety can remain.
In support of multi-agency efforts to achieve positive outcomes for the person concerned, the Forum can offer agencies a fresh perspective and multi-agency advice and recommendations as to how that person's risk could be reduced.
There is a clear expectation that prior to making a referral to the Forum, agencies will have explored the available options to respond to and mitigate the risks that the person experiences. It is only where these approaches have been tried and have been unsuccessful in mitigating exceptional risk, that a referral to the forum should be considered.
Are you a trustee in a charity? Do you understand your role around safeguarding?
Simon Bayliss, Senior Practice Development Manager at the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has presented a podcast about safeguarding for trustees and the important role that they must play.
The Charity Commission provides information about fulfilling your trustee duties and taking reasonable steps to protect people who come into contact with your charity, including staff and volunteers.
