News

Solar panels

Low income homeowners in Leeds can now apply for free solar panels and insulation.

Leeds City Council has secured solar panels, insulation and other improvements for nearly 685 homes. Insulating your home can reduce the cost of energy bills and keep your home warm, all whilst cutting carbon emissions. The scheme is open to low-income homeowners (private tenants may apply with landlord permission) on a first come first served basis. Find out more about the scheme and whether your household qualifies.

New designs to improve cycling and walking infrastructure and green the city centre have been approved by councillors.

Over the next 12 months, two traffic lanes on Meadow Road will be replaced with new cycle lanes, trees, pollinator-friendly shrubs and grass verges—and a new traffic-free bridge to Sovereign Street will be installed, improving connectivity with the city centre. Read the report about the ‘Grey to Green’ scheme to find out more.

Work to transform the public realm outside the Corn Exchange is set to begin.

The improvements will include tree planting along the roadsides, safer routes for cyclists and new crossing points designed to help pedestrians navigate the space safely. Find out more about the transformation on our most recent press release.

Opportunities

Celebrate National Walking Month by taking part in Challenge 2038.

Walking is a great way to be more active and travel sustainably. To celebrate National Walking Month, our local Travel Plan Network is hosting Challenge 2038 to encourage people to get walking. Organisation focus

Fareshare

FareShare Yorkshire redistributed 2,802 tonnes of food last year, helping to tackle food insecurity and reduce our carbon footprint.

According to the UN, if the world’s food waste was a country, then it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions. Most food waste occurs in the supply chain before it even reaches the supermarket.

FareShare works with retailers to redistribute this perfectly edible surplus food to the communities that need it the most. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, FareShare Yorkshire has created an additional warehouse in Holbeck to provide even more support for the people of Leeds.

You can find out more about Fareshare Yorkshire and how you can support them on their website.
