Keeping You Informed - April 2021

Otley Flood Alleviation Scheme

Work underway at Billams Hill

Drainage preparation works

It has been several weeks since our contractors BMMjv started construction and there has already been some changes on site.

The team has removed an area of material in preparation for the new culvert (pipe) which will form part of the new Kell Beck alignment.

These works will connect Kell Beck to the River Wharfe via an open channel, helping to improve biodiversity.

Kell Beck drainage units

Precast units, which are being used as part of the drainage installation, have also been delivered to site.

The use of precast concrete has significantly reduced the amount of vehicles required for construction as traditional timber formwork, reinforcing steel and ready mixed concrete would all have been delivered separately.

Preparations for upcoming sheet piling works have also taken place. This has involved removing the top layer of ground and surface cobbles.

More information about sheet piling works can be found in this newsletter.

Sheet piling

The first phase of sheet piling will begin w/c Monday 12 April and is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Preparations will involve bringing heavy machinery on site from 06:30am during the morning of Tuesday 13 April and Wednesday 14 April. This should take no longer than an hour. As a result, there may be a minor traffic delay on Billams Hill during this time.

The core sheet piling work will begin later in the week. While this work is taking place, residents may experience some vibrations and noise, however, we will do our very best to keep this to a minimum.

Where we are piling close to buildings, we will be using a piling technique that has no vibrations.

If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please contact Rebecca Stone at Rebecca.Stone@bamnuttall.co.uk.

Other planned activity this month

  • Continue sheet piling for phase 1
  • Install precast Kell Beck culvert units
  • Commence Kell Beck outfall (connection) to River Wharfe.
