Coronavirus - Support for people & communities - February 12, 2021

Dear resident

We hope you’re safe and keeping well.

An update on Leeds’ infection rates

The latest figures for infection rates in Leeds is currently down at 196.8 per 100,000 and the positivity rate is also down at 8.8%.

Infection rates are now slowly decreasing but still remain high. It is estimated that the new UK variant accounts for over three quarters of all cases in Leeds and significant pressure remains on the NHS.

The best way to keep yourself and others safe is by acting as though you have the virus.

We must all keep doing everything we can to keep the infection rate down and support the NHS and our key workers. Please remember to stay at home unless essential, keep your distance from those not in your household and wear a face covering when required.

Vaccination news

The vaccination programme continues to go well in Leeds, thanks to the combined efforts of volunteers, NHS staff and organisations from across the city.

Vaccination is the most important thing you can do to protect your community against serious illnesses.

Vaccinations are currently being administered to healthcare workers, those over 70 years old and those who are clinically extremely vulnerable. Earlier this week, the Health Secretary urged anyone over 70 who hasn’t got a vaccination appointment to contact the NHS. You can do so via the national booking system online, by calling 119, or by speaking to your GP practice.

For everyone else, the message stays the same to please remain patient and do not contact the NHS about vaccinations.

Have your questions answered

Health professionals from NHS Leeds will be hosting a Covid-19 Facebook Live session on Saturday 20 February, 2-3pm. The session will cover information about the Covid-19 vaccine and a Q&A. Watch live on the NHS Leeds Facebook page.

In the meantime, there’s plenty of trusted information and advice about vaccinations on the NHS Leeds website.

NHS England have also put together a useful video for those with learning difficulties and autistic people to explain how the vaccines work. This is available to watch on YouTube.

Travelling to your vaccination appointment

The rules on the use of concessionary passes have been relaxed to help people access COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Holders of concessionary travel passes can use them for travel to and from a COVID-19 vaccination appointment, even if that means travelling before 0930. Passholders travelling before 0930 will be asked to show their appointment letters, texts or emails. More information about travelling to vaccination centres is available at www.wymetro.com

As the region looks to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority on the future of transport in the region.

We have identified a range of options to create an integrated network bringing walking and cycling, rail, bus and a new mass transit system together and we want your views. Go to www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/connectivity to find out more and have your say.

Half term activities for families

Child Friendly Leeds have put together an ultimate guide to keep children, young people and families entertained during lockdown this half term. The guide includes lots of activities to do at home, wellbeing resources, e-learning and competitions for all ages. View the guide online.

Their first monthly competition theme is well-being. In such a time of change, loss and worry for young people, prioritising personal emotional well-being is incredibly important. To help promote this message across the city, children and young people are invited to produce an ultimate personal well-being kit that can be used for children and young people across the city.
