Harehills Ward Update - November 2020

Welcome to the November edition of the CNT update created for you, the residents of Harehills! Please see some of the fantastic results we have to share with you.

Bonfire Night - Success!

As posted in our October update, our Street Cleansing and Enforcement Teams worked tirelessly through the run up to Bonfire Night 2020 to remove all dangerous deposits of waste on the highway and address waste issues in private gardens. Enforcement officers also worked closely with local businesses to reduce commercial waste issues. There was a notable difference in activity in Harehills this year and we received some great feedback from the Neighbourhood Policing Team in regards to our support.

A sweep in time saves 9...

Our street cleansing team are in the area daily clearing general litter, fly tipped waste and bulky items from the streets of Harehills. Our hard working teams don't rest until the job is done!

Every fly tip that our Street Cleansing team remove is checked for evidence prior to removal, however we don't always find the key that we need. If you witness a fly tipping offence and are prepared to give a supporting statement please contact us here!

Christmas Bin Collections

Please remember that your normal bin collection days may slightly change in light of the festive period. An official announcement will be made w.c. 7th December 2020 with the confirmed schedule. Find more information on our "Check Your Bin Day" page.

Gettin' dirty with it...

Enforcement officers investigate illegal deposits of waste for evidence on a daily basis and it's not always pretty! Luckily with a strong stomach and the right PPE evidence has been retrieved from the ones shown below.

Watch our Virtual Christmas Light Switch On!

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year our Lights Switch On will be done slightly differently. Our Communities Team have organised a virtual lights switch on to start the festive celebrations in Harehills. Make sure you tune in at 6:30pm on Thursday the 3rd December and see if you recognise any familiar faces.

Commercial Waste Away!

Enforcement officers must also tackle waste issues occurring as a result of poor waste management at commercial premises. Such issues include overflowing bins and damaged receptacles.

Below we share two success stories; the first of a damaged bin belonging to a takeaway that had recently closed down on Roundhay Road. The bin was damaged and overflowing and was removed by the waste carrier. The owner of the new shop has brand new bin in place for the waste.

In the second, a grocery shop failed to adhere to a legal notice that was served and a £100 fine was issued. The fine was paid and the business continues to be monitored.

Waste in Garden Issues

Waste in garden issues arise as a result of a number of things, such as new tenants moving in/old tenants moving out, missing/insufficient number of domestic waste bins, renovation works and illegal deposits of waste.

Our team tackle these issues as such waste can encourage infestations of vermin, cause nuisance through odour, look unsightly and pose a risk of fire when flammable.

Please see below some great before/after shots following successful enforcement work this month.
