Coronavirus - Support for people and communities - October 22, 2020

Dear Resident,

Today we are sharing with you an update on the current number of cases in Leeds as well as information on how to celebrate upcoming events safely.

Latest updates to Leeds restrictions

The latest figures for the 7 day infection rate is 381.8 per 100,000 and the positivity rate is 13.7%. We urge everyone to remain vigilant, keep following the public health advice and adhere to the government’s restrictions to keep yourself and others safe; and to keep bringing the infection rate down. Remember to wash your hands, wear a face covering, maintain social distancing and crucially self-isolate if you have a positive test or have contact with someone who has tested positive.

The Covid Alert Level for Leeds currently remains at Tier 2, “High” and is being reviewed by central Government regularly. By downloading the NHS Test and Trace app, you will automatically be notified if this alert level changes.

Discussions about the tiered restrictions are at the forefront of everybody’s mind and will undoubtedly be causing a great deal of anxiety. We don’t anticipate that there will be imminent changes to restrictions this week.

The Tier 2 government restrictions in place for Leeds mean that it is against the law to:

  • have guests inside your home
  • go inside someone else's home (in or outside of Leeds)
  • meet people you do not live with inside any other indoor venue, such as a pub, cafe or restaurant (in or outside of Leeds)
  • meet with more than 5 other people outside

You need to follow these rules if you have your bins emptied by Leeds City Council.

There are a number of exemptions to these restrictions including those in childcare and support bubbles. For full details visit www.leeds.gov.uk/coronavirus/local-rules

Staying safe at Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching and this year’s celebrations will be very different.

If you do choose to celebrate, you must follow the rules around social distancing and household mixing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please remain vigilant to help protect family, friends and communities.

Just because government restrictions are in place does not mean you cannot celebrate Halloween. There are many fun and creative ways to celebrate at home while adhering to the rules:

  • Take part in a local pumpkin trail
  • Host a virtual party online
  • Watch a scary movie with the family
  • Decorate your own house
  • Dress up and share your costumes on social media

Bonfire Night

This Bonfire Night, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) is urging people NOT to host events or have bonfires at their own private property. Public bonfires traditionally held across Leeds to mark Bonfire Night have also been cancelled.

Garden bonfires can easily get out of control. Not only do these pose a serious risk to yourself, your family and the public, but they also take emergency services away from other potentially life-threatening incidents. Last year WYFRS received over 500 emergency calls on Bonfire Night alone.

Many people, such as those with learning difficulties and disabilities, and pets also struggle with the loud noises caused by firework displays over the extended Bonfire period.

Respect the emergency services, respect your neighbours, and respect the fireworks.

There a lots of alternative ideas to celebrate bonfire night without putting yourself and others at risk such as:

  • Sizzling snacks - from cheesy tomato Catherine Wheels to hot dog rockets, the BBC Good Food website has loads of ideas for Bonfire Night snacks.
  • Craft with a bang- for bonfire night craft ideas, have a look at The Elf on the Shelf website.
  • Get glowing - add different coloured glow sticks to plastic bottles of water for a game of night-time skittles, or use the glow sticks to play glow-in-the-dark hoopla.

Light Night 2020

Laser Light City will give residents all across the city the chance to take charge of an incredible crisscrossing network of light beams shining from the rooftops of seven Leeds buildings. The event, running from October 22 to 24, has been specially designed to allow people to enjoy the event safely, remotely and in line with social distancing.

If you are seeing the lasers in person please make sure you observe social distancing and household mixing restrictions.
