Welcome back to the #LeedsClimate newsletter from Leeds City Council’s Climate Emergency and Air Quality Team. We hope you are keeping safe and well.

In this edition of the newsletter—which marks World Environment Day—we’re highlighting all of the work that has continued or recently begun which is helping to reduce our city’s carbon footprint.

As well as a round-up of what’s been happening we’ve also included a number of ways you can get involved…

In case you missed it

Roads outside 6 Leeds primary schools will be turned into pedestrian and cyclist zones during pick up and drop off hours.

This is part of the Leeds School Streets pilot scheme which launched earlier this week. The scheme will help to improve air quality around schools and encourage sustainable travel. Children are one of the groups most affected by the health impacts of air pollution.

You can read more about the scheme here.

Temporary cycle lanes and widened footpaths have been introduced across Leeds.

In the city centre and surrounding districts, new measures have been introduced to allow for social distancing and safe active travel. The measures will help residents to move around the city safely and sustainably. Keep your eyes peeled for more schemes being introduced in the coming weeks.

Find out more and stay up to date with the Connecting Leeds schemes on Twitter or via their website.

Leeds Building Society is creating a new zero-emission head office to reduce its carbon footprint.

The redevelopment of an existing building will create a new energy-efficient office space in the city centre to house more than 800 staff currently split across three sites. Materials will be repurposed and 70% of the supply chain is sourced from within a 30 mile radius to help reduce emissions.
