News Bulletin - September 2019

Highlights from Summer 2019

Thousands of children, young people and families enjoyed a host of amazing city centre activities and events this summer. From the fantastic partnership project Leeds Jurassic Trail, coordinated by Leeds Bid, to the free CFL Sundays events. It was amazing to see so many partners putting on events city-wide and getting involved in the CFL Live Festival in Millennium Square, which welcomed 3000 children and their families for a day of creativity and fun! We are delighted to announce that  ‘Child Friendly Leeds city centre project’ has been shortlisted as a finalist in the The Partnership Working Award at the Children & Young People Now Awards 2019’. Thank you to all involved!

Year of Reading

Leeds has declared a Year of Reading from September 2019 to September 2020! We want Leeds to become a city of reading, where stories and books are a valued and integral part of everyone’s lives. A love of reading leads to a love of learning and this helps to underpin achievement in all subjects at both primary and secondary school. So we feel it is vital that the city supports children, families and communities to engage with reading and all of the associated activities that support reading. Follow the year of reading on Twitter (@LeedsYOR ) and use the hashtag #Leedslovesreading if you want to get involved.

Welcome to Leeds film for new arrivals: In response to an increase in unaccompanied young asylum seekers being transferred to Leeds, The Children's Society worked with Leeds City Council to develop films to welcome refugees. Many young people arriving in the city had never heard of Leeds before, and therefore very anxious about being brought to Leeds. If you're working with any young people or new arrivals, please share these films (available in several languages).
