Wondering about the wheelie bin rollout?

  • Lewes

  • Glynde

  • Iford

  • Itford

  • Kingston

  • Northease

  • Piddinghoe

The switch to wheelie bins means they can be mechanically emptied, making collections much safer for the crews in the short and long-term.

Wheelie bins also mean cleaner streets as seagulls etc can't rip into resident's rubbish. The new bins are made in the UK of 98% recycled plastic.

There are two sizes of refuse bin to choose from:

Choose Your Bin - 140 litre: Ideal for 5 people. 240 litre: Ideal for more than 5 people

What do you need to do if you live in a Phase 4 area?

  • If you already have an LDC-issued refuse wheelie bin, you are welcome to keep using it and do not need to do anything.

  • If you have requested a particular size bin, we'll deliver this by mid-August. If you don't make a request, we'll deliver you one appropriate for the size of your home.

  • If you do not have space for a bin, you can request a gull-proof bag instead. These requests will be assessed by our Waste team before approval, as they are only for homes with no space to store a bin or very narrow pavements.

  • If you have an old refuse bin you would like us to take away to be recycled or repurposed, you can request this via our wheelie bin web page: lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk/wheeliebins

  • If you have submitted a removal request, our crews will take away your old bin after your new bin has been delivered - due to the high number of requests, this could take up to 20 days, so please leave it somewhere the crew can see and get to.

  • Until you have your new refuse bin, please continue to put your refuse out in black sacks or your usual bin.

  • Once your new bin is delivered please continue to put your bins out by 6am on your collection day. After we have emptied your bin, please store it somewhere that doesn't obstruct the path outside your home.
