Lewes District Council is recruiting for a number of casual and temporary positions in the upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections.
The PCC election will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024 and the count for this will take place on Sunday 5 May 2024.
During elections, we recruit a pool of additional temporary staff to support the democratic process.
We are currently recruiting for multiple posts in the roles below:
Presiding Officers
Presiding Officers are responsible for the management of a polling station and are responsible for the conduct of the ballot. They organise the set-up of the polling station and enable electors to cast their vote in secret and without influence.
Polling Stations are open from 7am – 10pm. Staff are required to arrive at the polling station by 6.30am to set up and may not leave until the equipment has been cleared down after close of poll.
Payment is in the region of £298 plus an additional payment for undertaking training.

Poll Clerks
Poll Clerks work under the direction of the Presiding Officer and assist with keeping the polling station clean and tidy, answer electors’ questions, checking voter ID, marking the register and handing over their ballot papers.
As Poll Clerk you would assist the Presiding Officer with running the polling station. You will help to set up the polling station and assist with the issue of ballot papers enabling electors to cast their vote.
You would also help set-up the polling station furniture and equipment prior to opening and after the close of poll, including packing up equipment.
Polling station staff will be given breaks but are not permitted to leave the premises during the hours of poll. You would work a 16-hour day,
Payment is in the region of £190 plus an additional payment for training.

Count Assistant
Once voting is over ballot papers are taken the counting centre, where they are checked, sorted and counted, by hand.
Count staff must be able to quickly and accurately sort and count ballot papers, working under the direction of a Count Supervisor. As a Count Assistant you will work as part of a team to verify, sort and count ballot papers.
The length of time a Count takes will depend on the size and nature of the election and whether re-counts are required. You must be prepared to stay as long as it takes.
Payment is in the region of £11.93 per hour for a count conducted in the day and £17.89 per hour for a count conducted over night.
