Waste and Recycling

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Bulletin | July 2023

Today's top tips - what you can put in your kerbside recycling bin

You can recycle many clean, grease free and dry items in your kerbside recycling collections:

  • Plastics: Bags, bottles, food pots, tubs and trays.
  • Glass: Bottles and Jars only (no glassware, mirrors or Pyrex).
  • Cardboard: Clean and dry boxes and packaging.
  • Metal: Food, drink and aerosol cans, aluminium foil and trays.
  • Paper: Leaflets, letters, envelopes and junk mail, magazines and newspapers, paperback books, catalogues and directories, greeting cards and wrapping paper (but no foil, metallic, or glitter please).

Batteries are the major cause of fires within the waste industry and should NOT be put into your refuse or recycling. All shops that sell batteries should by law provide a battery recycling collection point, please take you used batteries with you when buying new ones.

Lions litter pick was a roaring success

Lions club members

Members of the Adur East, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club joined forces to litter pick the Big Park in Peacehaven, using equipment supplied by the council's Environment First Team.

Claudine Rogers, Lions area coordinator, said “When selfless, like-minded people gather together, beautiful things happen. From facilitating health screenings and feeding the hungry to cleaning up local parks and helping rebuild communities after disaster, Lions are ready and willing to jump in wherever there’s a need”.

Advice for residents with communal or shared bins

If you share refuse bins with neighbours or store your own bins in a communal area, please use them correctly and look after them. If the bins are regularly overflowing before collection day, you can contact your landlord, managing agent or housing association and request they contact the council to help find a solution.

We can only collect recycling and refuse that is contained within the correct bins, anything left next to or on top of the bins can not be taken. Please do not leave bulky items next to the bins as it will not be taken away.

Collection crews will pick up any rubbish that they spill when servicing the bins but they cannot clear mess or rubbish split by residents.

Place your clean and loose recycling into the recycling bin, please do not put recycling in bags. Sadly if the wrong items are put in the recycling bin the entire contents may not be recycled and the bins may be permanently removed.
