Our regular email of tips to help you waste less and recycle more

Today's tips: focus on waste reduction

Reducing what you waste is a great way to reduce your impact on the environment.

From thinking differently about what you buy, to using re-usable items or composting at home - there are lots of ways to make a real difference.

  • Think before you buy: only buy what you really need, resist the urge to impulse purchase and look to borrow or hire where possible e.g. from the Lewes Library of Things, books from the library, or put a request out on local social media groups.

  • Repair and re-use: save waste and money by repairing things you own such clothes, toys, tools or IT equipment. Find your nearest Repair Cafe. Choose refill shops and services which allow you to bring your own bags and containers and buy exactly how much you need.

  • Stop junk mail: sign-up for the 'Your Choice' preference scheme found on the Royal mail website to stop unaddressed mail to your home.

  • Use re-sealable packaging: this will keep opened food fresh for longer. Alternatively use a bag clip or air-tight container.

Lewes ACE UK waxy carton bin moving to Ham Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre

Brook Street ACE UK bin

Waxy cartons cannot be easily recycled alongside other items because they are made of multiple layers of different material. ACE UK specialises in recycling this type of packaging and have a dedicated carton bin in Lewes.

ACE UK have decided to move their bin in Lewes from Brook Street Car Park to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Ham Lane. The move took place on Thursday 7 October.

The closure of the Brook Street site is in response to persistent fly-tipping at this location. By moving this bin to the HWRC on Ham Lane, ACE UK will also be able to double the size of the carton bins available.

We encourage people to try and avoid products in waxy cartons as these cannot be easily recycled but we are grateful to ACE UK for continuing to offer a bin of this type in the district to give local people this recycling option.

Reduce pumpkin waste this Halloween

Halloween dogs

Carving pumpkins is a fun tradition, but there can sometimes be a lot of waste. Here are some ideas to make the most out of your Halloween pumpkin.

Grow next year’s pumpkin!

Plant your pumpkin seeds and grow next year’s pumpkin. Save any seeds and dry them out carefully.

Pumpkins are best grown from seeds indoors in pots of compost mid to late April and then later sown outdoors in late May or early June in a sheltered spot. The flowers are good for pollinators too!

Eat it!

There are loads of delicious recipes you can create with pumpkin. For some really tasty options visit BBC Good Food - pumpkin recipes

Feed your dog!

Before feeding to any animals make sure there is no pen, paint or candle wax on it. Horses and chickens love to eat pumpkins.

Pumpkin flesh is great for dogs, high in fibre, and low in calories. The flesh can be steamed or boiled, and then mashed before feeding. You can even roast it with skin on and scoop out flesh before feeding it to dogs with sensitive stomachs.

How about trying a pumpkin dog treat? https://wildwildwhisk.com/pumpkin-dog-treats/

Please check with your vet before feeding your dog pumpkin.

Recycle your food waste

You can recycle any leftover pumpkin in your food waste caddy and we will take it along with your other food waste to be turned into soil conditioner for local farmers and gardeners.

If you haven't joined the service yet, autumn is a great time to get started! Join our free food waste collection service

But please always dispose of your used pumpkins responsibly!

Although used pumpkins are biodegradable please never throw them away in a park or public garden - this is still littering.

Love your clothes!

Clothes

UK households have an average of £4,000 worth of clothes - but 30% of those haven’t been worn in the last year!

We can all save money and help the environment by making simple changes to the way we buy, use and get rid of our clothing.

Buying clothes

We spend £1,800 on average each year on clothes. There are lots of ways we can make the most of this money by checking our wardrobes and making a list before we go shopping, choosing clothing designed to last longer and buying second hand.

Getting more out of our existing clothes

The reason some of our clothes remain unworn is because they no longer fit, need repairing, or they don't suit our style or taste anymore. To overcome this you can:

  • look for shops nearby which offer repair and alteration services
  • wear clothes in new combinations and use accessories to give clothing a new lease of life
  • use energy efficient laundry methods.

Keeping clothes out of the bin

Nearly half of us putting some clothing in the bin, but all of our clothing can either be re-used or recycled.

Pass it on!

If clothing is in good condition but is no longer of use to you, consider passing it on to someone else.

  • Pass on, exchange or share unwanted clothes with friends and family.
  • Unwanted clothing has a value. Why not sell them online or at a car boot sale
  • Donate clothing to charity shops or through collection services offered by charities, local councils, retailers and other organisations.

Recycle

Clothing that isn't in good enough condition to be passed onto someone else can be recycled into other things.

Environment First raises more than £3,000 for charities

Environment First charity walk

The Environment First team at Lewes District Council has shown its support for two charities at recent fundraising events.

The waste team hosted its annual Bacon Butty Breakfast at the Robinson Road depot in Newhaven, amassing £560 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Anyone wishing to donate can still do so via
www.justgiving.com/fundraising/environmentfirstwalk

Following this, Environment First organised a Friends ‘n’ Family charity walk to Cuckmere Haven which topped up the Macmillan donation to £1,220.

This event saw one group set off from Newhaven and stride out along Seaford beach to Cuckmere Haven where they met up with a group that started in Eastbourne and walked over the Seven Sisters.

Additionally, the Environment First team took part in the Seafront Soapbox Race in Eastbourne with a soapbox named LAMBO 1, in memory of their much-loved friend Chris Lambert who died three years ago.

Their race efforts have so far raised a staggering £2,000 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. For anyone wishing to contribute visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/environmentfirstsoapbox

And finally....

A27 litter clearance

Huge thanks to Darren and the Environment First team for litter picking the A27 in the small hours of Sunday morning.

They cleared a whopping 22 bags of litter, plus some larger items.

Such a shame that a small minority of people still haven't got the message about the environmental impact of littering but we are extremely grateful to the team for keeping the district clean for local people and wildlife!

Keep up the good work team!
