Council box clever with recycling offer
Schools and charities in the Lewes district are being invited to take their pick of thousands of unwanted recycling boxes and bags.
The free offer follows Lewes District Council’s on-going roll-out of over 40,000 new wheelie bins to local homes. The green wheelie bins with a blue lid are replacing the assortment of boxes and bags that residents had to use to sort their household waste. However, some schools are already putting the discarded plastic boxes to good use by using them to grow flowers and even potatoes. Councillor Paul Franklin, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling at Lewes District Council, said:
“I was delighted to see the back of those old boxes and bags, but it’s great news that we’re recycling some of them. We’ve got thousands to giveaway and whatever the use, growing plants or for extra storage, schools and charities are welcome to them. Any left will be recycled again though.
“Above all I’m thrilled that the wheelie bins are proving so popular with residents and consequently the amount of waste being recycled in the district is increasing all the time.”
