Look Back: Weaving Out Waste
This Spring term, children in years 4 & 5 from 32 Wandsworth primary schools worked collaboratively to create an art exhibition exploring the impact of textile waste on the planet. Each class created a piece of weaving to form part of a huge textile river, which was exhibited to the public in spring 2024, attracting 28 school groups and 1516 visitors!
The project's inspiration was drawn from Wandsworth's rich history of textile manufacturing along the Wandle River. Pupils practiced weaving techniques on Wandsworth-sourced reclaimed fabrics to create their individual and unique piece of cloth.
Through the project, pupils learned about the life cycle of a garment to understand the environmental impact of the current industrial systems in the fashion industry and discovered sustainable methods of consuming and manufacturing clothing.
As well as this environmental education, pupils developed their creative skills such as drawing, sketching, cutting, weaving, and creating patterns with colours.

Elsewhere you can still catch the Wandsworth and The World Banners on the railings at Wandsworth Town Hall, and the Fashioning Wandsworth exhibition across local Libraries, until September 2024!
