Service changes on Monday 19 September 

The government have declared Monday 19 September as a bank holiday for the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  

The Civic Centre reception and Customer Contact Centre will be closed. In an emergency, please call 020 8891 7999. 

Waste and recycling 

Waste and recycling collections will take place one day later than usual. For example, Monday collections will take place on Tuesday and Friday collections on the Saturday. Normal domestic collection schedules will resume a week later on Monday 26 September.   

Townmead Road Household Waste and Recycling Centre will be closed for the day. Anyone with bookings for the Townmead Recycling Centre will be contacted directly and will be able to visit at any time over the next two weeks, without an appointment. 

Schools

Schools and colleges will be closed. 

Libraries

Libraries will remain closed, as is normal for a bank holiday.

Sport centres

Pools on the Park in Richmond will be open for reduced hours in the morning. All other sports and fitness centres will be closed. Full details here.

Registration services 

There will be a limited Registrars service for pre-existing appointments that could not be rearranged. On-call services will be available in an emergency.

Cemeteries 

Cemeteries will be open from 10am to 6.30pm for visitors. The Cemeteries Office will be closed.

Local Commemoration Service and Minute Silence

The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames will be hosting a public civic service of commemoration on Sunday 18 September, 6-7pm at St. Mary’s Church, Twickenham. Please note seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The service will also be live streamed. A national one-minute silence will take place at 8pm on Sunday. 

Attending the Lying-in-State

The Lying-in-State of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Hall is open to the public 24 hours a day from 5pm on Wednesday 14 September until 6.30am on Monday 19 September. Please note the queue is expected to be very long. You will need to stand for many hours, possibly overnight, with little opportunity to sit down, as the queue will keep moving.

Local Proclamation

The Proclamation is the formal announcement of the new monarch. The Proclamation was made locally by the Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Julia Cambridge at a short formal ceremony at 2.30pm on Sunday 11 September on the steps of York House in Twickenham.

Books of Condolence 

Buckingham Palace is welcoming messages from the public in an online Book of Condolence. While we encourage residents to sign the online book, physical books are available at the York House reception and Civic Centre reception in Twickenham and at each of our libraries.
