This year, the awards format changed to help encourage even more businesses from across the whole borough to enter, with the first round of nominations open for businesses to nominate themselves.

It is now over to the community to show some love for the small and independent businesses across the borough that continue to serve us.

Voting opened at 9am on Monday 10 June and will close at 4pm on Friday 19 July 2024, giving Havering residents five weeks to vote for their favourite businesses for each of the categories.

The voting form is available on the Havering Council website and only takes a couple of minutes to complete. Only one vote per person will be counted.

New CIC to ease housing demand

Havering Town Hall

Havering Council’s Cabinet has formally approved the establishment of a wholly owned community interest company (CIC) to manage private sector leased housing.

CICs are limited companies which operate to provide a benefit to the community they serve.

With the demand for local social housing higher than supply, the new management company will be part of the Council’s efforts to increase the stock of affordable properties.

Urban Impact Ltd will acquire properties (on a freehold or long leasehold basis) from the open market and lease the properties to the Council for a term of 10 years.

The properties will reflect the borough’s social housing demand based on the needs of applicants.

By the company leasing these properties on behalf of the Council, it will reduce the cost to the Council by up to £13 million over the 10 year period. Last year, the Council was forced to overspend its temporary accommodation budget by £6 million.

Barber Talk training

BarberTalk trained barbers 10 June 2024

A new team of barbers have been trained up in Havering to help them speak to their clients about their mental health.

The suicide prevention training will equip barbers to have open discussions with their clients and direct them to where help and support are available locally.

In England and Wales, suicide remains the leading cause of death among men under 50. Three in four deaths by suicide are by men.

The course, BarberTalk Live, is tailored for barbers, created and run by barbers.

It was delivered to Havering barbers by BarberTalk founder Tom Chapman.

Tom lost a close friend to suicide, which led to him establishing the Lions Barber Collective, a group advocating for men’s mental health and suicide prevention. Since its inception in 2015, the BarberTalk programme has recognised barbers as mental health champions and has trained barbers across the UK.

The programme plays a vital role in providing training in how to recognise symptoms of mental ill health in clients and signpost them to relevant support services.

The works at the park in Hornchurch, are being carried out by Ebsford Environmental on behalf of Havering Council. Certain areas around the lake will remain fenced off while the works take place and for some time after completion, to allow for vegetation to bed in.
