Yesterday I wrote to the boss of Network Rail to protest at that company's actions in cutting down trees alongside the rail line between Romford and Gidea Park and the branch line between Romford and Upminster.
I appreciate that Network Rail has to maintain the railways and ensure their safety and smooth running. However, in this case, local residents, the local MP and the Council are united in condemning this action. The much loved trees not only provide a wildlife habitat, but also help achieve our air quality targets by reducing carbon emissions.
No meaningful consultation took place with residents or any other interested parties and most residents living near these lines were not aware of the planned works until the cutting of trees began.
I have asked Network Rail to halt this work and for a formal meeting to discuss this further.
The NHS is still under enormous pressure with many beds filled with patients suffering from COVID-19. Even if you have recently had COVID-19 - and that's been the case for many thousands of people in Havering - it's still important to get your COVID-19 jabs and the booster. You can get a jab 28 days after your last positive test result (or from the day symptoms started, whichever was later). Two doses of vaccination does not give you enough protection against catching Omicron so you should get the booster too.
Getting COVID and recovering (known as "natural infection") doesn't appear to create protection as strong as that produced after vaccination. Vaccination boosts your antibodies and reduces the risk you'll get re-infected and is the most reliable way to protect you and your loved ones.
See below for details of vaccination centres across Havering that are open over the next three days.
Lastly, if you want to contact me directly, you can email me.
Cllr Damian White
Leader, Havering Council
Former Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington helped the start of building works for the new Rainham Leisure Centre go swimmingly this week.
The four-time Olympic swimming medallist joined Cllr Viddy Persaud, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure (both pictured centre above), and children from Rainham Village Primary school for the groundbreaking event.
They saw the first spade dug into the ground to mark a significant milestone in the construction of the new state of the art centre, on part of the Rainham Recreation Ground.
The new centre will be built using a modern design and will include a range of facilities such as a six-lane swimming pool, dance and spinning studio and a 72-station fitness suite.
It is expected to be completed and handed over to Everyone Active, the company that runs the leisure centres on behalf of Havering Council, in May 2023, and open to the public shortly afterwards.
Havering's annual Holocaust Memorial Day service will take place in Coronation Gardens, Romford, on Sunday 23 January at 2pm.
The theme for 2022 is One Day.
The actual Holocaust Memorial Day is January 27. That's the day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Last week more than 4,000 people in Havering were infected with COVID-19, the third highest weekly figure since the start of the pandemic.
Find out if you, or members of your family, are infected by ordering a lateral flow test (LFT) kit online, or picking one up from a pharmacy, asymptomatic testing site or library in Havering. See details on our website.
Take a LFT before you attend any social events where you are likely to be mixing with people indoors, and also before going to see anyone who may be particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 infection.
If you test positive with a LFT you no longer need to follow-up with a PCR test. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms. should still book a PCR test.
If you take a LFT and it shows you are positive (i.e. have COVID-19) you must self-isolate. The Government announced yesterday that from Monday 17 January you will be able to end that isolation period after five full days, provided you have negative LFT tests on days five and six. The day when you first tested positive counts as “day zero”.
Individuals who are still positive on their lateral flow tests must stay in isolation until they have had two consecutive negative tests taken on separate days.
The default self-isolation period continues to be 10 days, and you may only leave self-isolation early if you have taken two LFTs and do not have a temperature in line with the guidance.
There is no change to the guidance for unvaccinated contacts of positive COVID-19 cases, who are still required to self-isolate for 10 full days after their date of exposure to the virus.
